Try Google Public DNS

For those who encounter a poor DNS isp, give Google Public DNS a go http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using.html. It's sth like OpenDNS but saves you the "problems with Google" mentioned in the OpenDNS wiki. DON'T follow the setting instructions on the Google page. It doesn't work happily with Arch. Instead, follow the instructions in the OpenDNS wiki http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/OpenDNS, but replace the OpenDNS DNS servers with the Google ones. I've tried it. It is really faster. Enjoy it. wink

Re: Try Google Public DNS

um, my query time (via dig) with my ISP's nameservers was 15 ms, with google's it was 48.

/me puts back the original entries...

edit: now my ISP's is down to 8... is this a good time?

Re: Try Google Public DNS

Mine is 64ms with opendns and 48 with my ISP's nameserver - so this should be quite good.

Not that it would make any big difference in normal usage, I think.

Re: Try Google Public DNS

They say exactly what they are logging and how they do it: http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/privacy.html

Not to mention it's not infiltrating if you have to opt-in to the service.  I for one have no problem using most of their services since they lead to better products.  Yes they parse my email to create targeted ads, but it also results in handy links like tracking packages and adding events to my calendar.  Yes they record my voice when I use goog 411, but it leads to better transcriptions on google voice and better voice activated systems.  Yes they track my searches, but it lets me go back to old results faster for when you remember looking something up and now it's at the top of the results.

And as always, if you don't like it, don't use it...

The privacy issue is of concern though Google does seem fairly transparent regarding exactly what data they are collecting and for how long they retain it. I saw a comment on a blog somewhere that compared Gogle DNS and your typical ISP DNS. After all if you are using your ISP's DNS they not only know the sites you are browsing to, but they also know who you are, based on your IP address. At least Google doesn't have access to this, though they may have other ways of identifying you.

I'm currently using OpenDNS but might give Google a try as I don't use any of OpenDNS's features such as filtering.
