Recommended wireless usb?

Can anyone recommend a good usb wireless adapter?  I have an Encore Wireless-N dongle with the rt2870 chipset that worked great until kernel 2.6.31 and now it won't work at all.  I'd rather spend another $30 than keep upgrading and downgrading the kernel over and over trying to get the thing to work.  So, can anyone recommend a wireless adapter that is known to work in Arch with the current kernel version, and which might (hopefully, possibly) be robust to future changes in the kernel?  Is there a company and/or chipset with a good reputation for this?

Re: Recommended wireless usb?

Have you tried both the in-kernel driver and the one from the AUR?
Can't recommend another model since I'm in the same boat, using a rt2870 chipset (but its worked well using the in-kernel drivers for a while now).

Re: Recommended wireless usb?

I had the same problems as you. It seems there are two drivers for this chipset in 2.6.31 ... the unified rt2x00 driver in the kernel and the rt2870sta in the staging area. I used the staging driver as the unified driver wasn't working for me.

I blocked the kernel driver by adding !rt2800usb to the MODULES list in /etc/rc.conf

I added rt2870sta to /etc/modules

Rebooted and everything worked.

Still needed to set up wpa_supplicant.conf to authenticate using WPA2, but after that everything worked well. Good luck!
