Re: Laptops which run Arch

I run arch on 2 lappies:
1. Hp Elitebook 6930p - everything works perfectly (Bluetooth, Fingerprint reader, wifi, even internal acelometer is detected)
2. Hp Pavilion xt395 - works like a charm.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I have a gateway MT6705.  Everything worked right out of the box except the RFKill switch for the wirless card.  I have since switched form the RTL8180 that it came with to an Intel card, and now I have literally no complaints.

I really wasn't expecting a gateway to be so linux-friendly, but here we are.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Dell Latitude e4300

works perfectly (wlan, suspend-to-ram, uswsusp, dockingstation (dock/undock while running), multiple monitors with xrandr)

two minor things to watch out for:
- right out of the box the cpu will be stuck in the lowest frequency mode after resume from suspend-to-ram (which works perfectly by the way). You will need to setup the frequency scaling in some way to prevent this. I found that the easiest solution is to just put those lines into /etc/rc.local
>>>>
modprobe acpi-cpufreq
echo ondemand > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
echo ondemand > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/cpufreq/scaling_governor
<<<<

- sound only works reliably with a modprobe option:
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m4-1

Lenovo Thinkpad T61p

T7700 / 4GB RAM / Nvidia FX 570M / Intel 4965

Resuming from hibernation takes about 2-3min - both with pm-hibernate or tuxonice.

Everything else works just flawlessly.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Arch is now on Lenovo S10e netbook. It is with BCM4312 wireless, working fine with broadcom-wl from aur. The only problem is tearing (intel Mobile 945GME chipset, tried in openbox / gnome with and without kms). The h and v sync settings not honored in xorg.conf, further probing required.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I've got it running on a Dell Latitude D610. So far so good, I haven't had any trouble getting anything to work...well except sound in alsa for a minute...but don't ask it was a stupid mistake tongue

I'm considering trying it out on my Clevo M570RU, but we'll see, I might save that for a later date.

The entire Z series requires a great deal of work to get going, especially on Arch.

You will need to pass the parameter acpi_osi="!Windows 2006" to your kernel, which causes a kernel panic due to the braindead way Arch parses these parameters. The solution is to compile your own kernel which does not need initramfs, and then you can pass the acpi_osi parameter. This allows you to switch the graphics card following a halt, and also prevents both graphics cards from be initialised at the same time, confusing X and wasting power.

Many of the other features (sleep button, vol buttons, power management to drive/bluetooth, etc) can be fixed using an updated sony laptop module, available here: https://launchpad.net/~sony-vaio-z-series

The memory stick reader does not currently work, but a patch is available from the mailing list provided in the previous link, and it has been accepted into the kernel tree. It will likely be included in .32 and later.

I *HIGHLY* recommend joining the mailing list.

Once the initial hurdles are cleared, however, it's a wonderful laptop.

That exactly what i was looking for! Thanks!
Unfortunately, i'm not familiar with Archlinux, and it sounds like to be a nightmare to get it working fine on a Z series :-(
So i might stick on Debian for my future laptop...

Re: Laptops which run Arch

What's the general consensus about Dell models with pre-installed Ubuntu? Do they move to other distros easily, or is there Dell specific drivers bundled in?

The new Vostro V13 looks really nice, which led me to the above question.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Acer 5517

Kernel: 2.6.32 (Customized, everything is static minus the dm-crypt related modules)
Desktop: Xmonad, Xmobar, Dmen
Video: xf86-video-ati - Works perfect in 2D, no stable 3D
Audio: snd_hda_intel (Realtek Codec) - Not a problem (just remember to add yourself to the audio group;)
Ethernet: atl1c - Works perfect (remember to leave the experimental prompt on in menuconfig if you chose to go static)
Wireless: ath9k - Works perfect. It doesn't drop connections like it did in 2.6.31. Use -D wext w/ wpa_supplicant
USB: Working
Optical Disk: Working
Touchpad: Works. Use serio_something(raw)?, psmouse and xf86-input-synaptics
LED lights: Work properly
PM-Utils: Works fine, but I don't use it on my encrypted setup
CPUFreq: Do it. I get such great perfomance with a threshold of 65. I am usual doing things at 800MHz and feeling good about it
Laptop-Mode: It works.
KVM: It is disabled by the damn bios. I hate Acer now.

While the this is only single core, I get great performance out of this. It was the cheapest laptop at BestBuy this past Fall.

Toshiba Satellite L300 - OG1 . All works great except Fn key (and thus all function keys), and also fan control breaks if you use pm-suspend and/or pm-hibernate. See my wiki entry.

Compaq Presario CQ40-416AU. Almost everything works (except what I list, below). Using all graphics-related gits from [nightly] repo, and kernel from [testing].

Not yet tested: VGA output, HDMI output, and modem.
Not working: Suspend to disk and ram. The display doesn't come up. Hoping to find a solution soon.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I've had good success on my Acer Aspire 5535 - everything can work (though I never tested the modem, there were drivers available for it through the manufacturer)

When i was running Gnome DE everything worked including multimedia keys, card reader, camera, sound, video, microphone, touchpad, wireless. Now I am running XFCE4 (for about a week now) and I have yet to get my multimedia keys working, but everything else seems to be working fine.

Hope this helps someone,
Munky
