Wireless file sharing slow

Hi,

I have set up a samba network between my Arch system and my Windows XP system. Only, when I transfer files, the speed is around 900 kb/s. That is about the same as my internet speed. 900 kb/s seems very slow for a network transfer, since I have a 54g wireless router. What can I do to speed things up?

Now seriously, you need to provide more details, like the hardware you have (in the machine with linux, you can't get much help about windows here), the direction of the transfer, kernel you are using, that sort of stuff, otherwise people can only try to make guesses.

Mind you that wireless connections are not really blazing fast with 54Mb/s, 900KB/s isn't the most you can get but don't expect miracles.

I have also tested this in Vista instead of Arch and I get the same results. The direction makes no difference. My hardware:

Network controller: RaLink RT2600 802.11 MIMO (both systems)
Wireless router: Davolink DV-2020

Some options on the router are unaccessible, because they got preconfigured by the provider.

Try to disable IPv6 on your linux box and try again (check the wiki on how to do that), also which kernel are you using?

Try connecting both systems by cable, then just one by cable and check how fast things go and try to determine which side is the culprit, if when trying 1 wireless + 1 wired you always get "slow" speeds regardless of the OS then probably the router and/or wireless cards are to blame.

Just for debugging you may want to try your wireless setup without any form of encryption, just to make sure the encryption effort is not taxing the router or network cards.

I have disabled IPv6, but there is no difference. My kernel version is 2.6.31-ARCH. I haven't got a cable long enough to connect my pc's to the router, so I am unable to do that test right now I will try the encryption settings later.

900kb/s is actually quite fast over a wireless link. I keep thinking the wired connection within the intranet is still faster than that, in fact it is faster. I haven't seen 900kb/s out of a wireless connection yet.

Sometimes it's the underlying filesystem. The fastest I got out of reiser/ext was about 800-900kbs, but with ntfs-3g (without windows) I was able to get 1.07Mbps.

900Kbps according to your application is reaching close to a 10Mbps limit. Are you sure you aren't working with a 10Mbps limit in the router somewhere or elsewhere on the network?
