Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

Hey, how do you disable the IRQ gear?

I tried removing radeon_ucode but that didn't do it.. Heck everything is still working fine.

My 3D performance has tanked hard in QuakeLive. It went from super-awesome to fail. So any ideas?

EDIT:
The reason things still worked with radeon_ucode removed is because i use early start... so it was in the initial ram drive. LULZ Reverting to 32.1-1 nukes the IRQ waits.
It isn't the IRQ waits causing the speed issue. Im going back to the stable stuff...

EDIT 2: The stable stuff doesn't give me anything.. With or without KMS. There is something really screwy with the 32.2-1 kernel and the "Stable" libs.

Oh well.. I'm on my slow bleeding edge drivers.. Mind you they are only slow in Quake.. lots of other things are really fast.. I would say the speed issue is due to the increase in the opengl level. Mesa 7.8 uses OpenGL 2.0 where as 7.7 seems to use 1.4 or something. I think this could be at fault. Anyway...
Big regression is big.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

3D is working fine for me (haven't tried KMS) from the repo's, thinking about updating to git versions though, is there much of a difference at the moment? If so which is better (and safer) to go for kernel26-rc or kernel26-git?

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

@descendent87: I prefer kernel26-git.

I take a look at the libdrm-PKGBUILD from extra. The radeon-experimental-api is disabled. Maybe this produce some problems with KMS enabled.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

I am using the all latest in stable and 3D is working fine.
I have an 4850 HD, is it possible to configure it with monitors with different resolutions?
Any pointers/links would be appreciated. I used to be able to do with the proprietary driver but can't get it to work with xf86-video-ati and still have 3D

Did you try the xrandr tool?
Or the Display Settings from your DE?

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

Hi, I followed the How To in the first post of this thread, I installed kernel26-git, libdrm-git, dri2proto-git, glrptoto-git , mesa-full and xf86-video-ati-git from AUR.
I don't use a xorg.conf file.
I have an ATI radeon HD3470 video card on an acer aspire 5920g notebook.
Without KMS it works fine, I can play nexuiz (although only with low effects).
When I enable KMS (creating /etc/modprobe.d/radeon.conf and writing "options radeon modeset=1" in it) 3d acceleration stops working:

[toroseduto@LHC ~]$ glxinfo |grep -i opengl

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

From your dmesg:

r600_cp: Failed to load firmware "radeon/RV620_pfp.bin"

Make sure you installed kernel26-firmware-git and radeon_ucode from AUR.

I know this is not a good place to ask but I will anyway.....

Anyone know how well if at all the Open Driver is working on OpenBSD/NetBSD/FreeBSD or OpenSolaris?

I 'm sure that it works OK on FreeBSD 8.x, I'm not sure if you need -current ports.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

Awe, ya it seems it is. I have a bad habit of posting too soon.

http://wiki.freebsd.org/DriDrivers

From 7.2-RELEASE, the radeondrm kernel module supports R600 and R700 cards but it only enables EXA and Xv acceleration at present. There is preliminary support for R6/700 3D in 8-STABLE and 9-CURRENT but this requires Mesa from git, not the version currently (20090831) in ports. The xf86-video-ati driver is the one being used by the developer with fairly good results.

It's ruff. I REALY want to use BSD but I am trying to study for the RHCE test. So, I have to stay on Linux otherwise I'll never learn enough to pass. I know for sure I could get the Linux+ in a month or two but it doesn't seem like anyone cares about the Linux+. The only things I need to learn are the RedHat only stuff like the tools they made, supported hardware and the RPM. I've never used RPM. Owe, I also like don't know much vi stuff because I like never use it when I am really coding. I wish there was a disto independent Linux Certification that was respected as much as RHCE. RedHat sucks anyway.... Hardened-Gentoo it the way to go for a secure Linux server IMHO.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

I have two problems.

1st. I can't get KMS working with 2.6.32.2 (yes I know you'll be all saying "but in this version it's broken", just read). I know this version doesn't support KMS but I don't even see any reference to drm or kms in dmesg! I'm using everything from git + radeon-initrd + radeon_ucode (just to be safe). Any help will be appreciated.

2nd. Can someone upload a package of kernel26-git or kernel26-rc (stock configs)? I can't compile it as my laptop overheats and shuts down when compiling the kernel (compiling other stuff works, it's just the kernel). Thanks.

Yeah, I can confirm this. Had this issue last weekend. But you can continue compiling after restart.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

EDIT:
I reinstalled the whole stack (from git) and now I have 3d with this kernel (2.6.33rc3) and kms:

OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI R600 (RS780 9612) 20090101 TCL DRI2
OpenGL version string: 2.0 Mesa 7.8-devel
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.10
OpenGL extensions:

***

I am running kernel 2.6.33rc3. I compiled radeon as a module because it seems like kms no longer works when it is static. I have the kernel defaulting to kms. I have 3d acceleration when kms is off, but not when it is on.

Output from "glxinfo | grep opengl" (kms enabled):

OpenGL vendor string: Mesa Project
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.8-devel
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20
OpenGL extensions:

Xorg.0.log (kms enabled):

Wow, that sucks. If I had it built I'd upload it.

You know one thing you "Could" do is edit the /etc/makepkg.conf

If you change this line
#MAKEFLAGS="-j2"

to
MAKEFLAGS="-j1"

That "Should" limit the # of parallel compilation threads to only 1
You can also specify this setting in the PKGBUILD file and that will be the setting that is used for that package only.

Gentoo Handbook
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/h … xml?full=1

MAKEOPTS

With MAKEOPTS you define how many parallel compilations should occur when you install a package.
A good choice is the number of CPUs in your system plus one, but this guideline isn't always perfect.

MAKEOPTS for a regular, 1-CPU system
MAKEOPTS="-j2"

(Less clear Arch WiKi for Makepkg.conf)

MAKEFLAGS=

This is often used to set the number of jobs used, for example, -j2. Typically, this is modified for SMP systems.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

Hi, all according to the 2.6.32.3 changelog kms should work again for r600 cards.

commit 08ff73341f9d5bde2d5e54bfe4d6a3d2a3f2ee83
Author: Dave Airlie <airlied@redhat.com>
Date:   Mon Dec 21 14:33:52 2009 +1000

drm/radeon/kms: fix crtc vblank update for r600

In 2.6.32.2 r600 had no IRQ support, however the patch in
500b758725314ab1b5316eb0caa5b0fa26740e6b to fix vblanks on avivo
    cards, needs irqs.

So check for an R600 card and avoid this path if so.

This is a stable only patch for 2.6.32.2 as 2.6.33 has IRQs for r600.

I believe that was already known. Phoronix reported on that a while back. Good to see confirmation tho smile

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

Alright smile

I tried to install the new Catalyst and everything got all messed up. After about 2hrs I said F-this and just removed the catalyst and the patched Xserver, commented out the Ignorepackge line in pacman.conf, moved my xorg.conf to xorg.conf-bkp, pacman -Syu, Reboot pacman -S xorg xf86-video-ati.....

Way nicer then I thought it would be. I am never going back to the Catalyst. I'm on the Open Source driver from now on.

2.6.32.2-2-x86_64-ARCH

All stock Stable Repo packages

Kwin Effects ON # All WAY Better then with the Catalyst.

Flash Video EVEN Hulu! I can watch Full-Screen NOW YA! I could NEVER do that with the Catalyst.. well I think I could a long time ago but it keeps getting worse and worse with every new Catalyst release.

Quakelive at default settings Fullscreen at native resolution - 50FPS < 150FPS # Vary Vary Playable

After yesterday's nightly repo updates:

./r600_dri.so is owned by ati-dri-git 20100108-1

Glxinfo, KMS, 3d don't work. I tried with kernel 2.6.32.2 and 2.6.33-rc2, ati-dri-git from nightly repo and compiled from git.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

I have a strange problem with compositing and kde4. If i boot normally, kde isnt able to turn compositing on.
After i do a "killall kdm" everything works nicely. How is that possible?
I have a Ati 4850 and use xf86-video-ati-git, everything else is from testing/extra.

Re: Discussion: the ati/radeon open source drivers & radeon repository

Well.. I've been mucking around with GIT Mesa builds...

7.7.1-Devel seems to be awesome.
It's only Ogl 1.4 and no GLSL, however QuakeLive is back to 60-100FPS from only 3fps.

I'm compiling Mesa-full from AUR with "git checkout mesa_7_7_branch" added in. Oh and you have to remove the lines to add Nouveau support as it doesn't compile at the moment.

I'm going to test out 7.8 again soon, as the last time I compiled it was back in December.. and there seems to have been quite a bit of work on the r600 support since then.

EDIT:

7.8 is still 4fps.
