I have a SATA CD/DVDW but arch see only IDE but on the same computer Ubuntu 8.10 and windows xp detect it correctly as SATA. The drive is:

 Model=TSSTcorpCD/DVDW SH-S182M, FwRev=SB03, SerialNo=
 Config={ Fixed Removeable DTR<=5Mbs DTR>10Mbs nonMagnetic }
 RawCHS=0/0/0, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=0

 (maybe): CurCHS=0/0/0, CurSects=0, LBA=yes, LBAsects=0

 DMA modes:  mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
 UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 *udma2
 AdvancedPM=no

 * signifies the current active mode

The MotherBoard is: ASUS M2N-MX.

I can mount DVD video, CD audio. but dmesg:

mkinitcpio.conf is:

HOOKS="base udev autodetect sata filesystems"

I tried enabling the DMA with hdparm-d1 /ev/hda but it did not work.

I tried disabling ide: http://www.opensourcery.com/blog/chad-g … ata-laptop. But it did not work.

I tried SATA DVD player on another pc with arch: arch see player... SATA!!!

Conclusion:
The problem is that arch on that computer sees the drive as IDE instead of SATA. While on another PC everything is fine. How can I solve this problem?

Re: SATA DVD: arch see only IDE!

Try HOOKS="base udev autodetect scsi sata filesystems".

I do not understand the "never" comment.

On my Asus M2N-SLI deluxe with a sata LG GH22LS50 DVD burner is listed as /dev/sr0.
I have the scsi hook just like EVRAMP has suggested to you.
Lshal shows the burner listed as a scsi device which shows that scsi hook is required (or scsi support has to be built in to a customized kernel if you do not want to load the module).
My sata dvd burner just works, no fuss or muss. wink

# hwdetect --hooks
HOOKS="base udev autodetect scsi sata filesystems"
# lshal | grep -A 3 -B 3 -e "scsi.model = 'DVDRAM GH22LS50'"
  scsi.bus = 0  (0x0)  (int)
  scsi.host = 5  (0x5)  (int)
  scsi.lun = 0  (0x0)  (int)
  scsi.model = 'DVDRAM GH22LS50'  (string)
  scsi.target = 0  (0x0)  (int)
  scsi.type = 'cdrom'  (string)
  scsi.vendor = 'HL-DT-ST'  (string)

Re: SATA DVD: arch see only IDE!

Have you run mkinicpio after editing? If so, try also fallback image.

Re: SATA DVD: arch see only IDE!

I have a very strange issue.. i've tried this on my system, and my BD-R drive which kept dissapearing when accessed now works fine.
however, whenever I eject something the tray goes right back in. Anybody ever see a strange behavior like this?

thanks
