things to play with on spare server?

I have a server running on FreeBSD that will replace my current one running Fedora. I want that box to be occupied with a bunch of funny server stuff. In other words I want some geeky stuff running in that server wink
Ideas that I have:
- BitlBee
- Web Server
- Mail Server
- File Server
- Torrent Leech/Seedbox

Have you got other useful/creative stuff that can keep an old server occupied?

I thought about things as folding@home too, but the server isn't a cpu-monster, so I don't think It would actually be useful for anything...

You could set up a Squid server: www.squid-cache.org
I set it up on my home server, just to play with. Does it make my browsing that much faster? not really, but it was a good learning experience if I ever need to set it up on a larger network where it would make a difference.

Yeah, I actually once had a icecast server running to listen the music from my desktop on my ipod touch. But the controls had miserable latency, I think just mpd with a http stream would do it just as good.

Isn't that ironic? I always thought a proxy would slow the connection down, because the traffic is routed through an additional instance. But a proxy that speeds the connection up?

I heard about running a BIND-DNS server on a home server. What would be the advantage here? I couldn't really find that out.

you can also set up a git repo to back up and track all your dotfiles + set up gitweb for additional fun.
