Despite all the suicidal effects invoved I upgraded to the recent content of kde-unstable and it's been working better than ever so far:) All it needs is the latest libpng and libjpeg. But I can't wait for the RC2 anyway:)

I'm too "afraid" to upgrade right now, I 'm writing my essay for the university with Kile/Xelatex, and when I saw that libpng error today, I almost had a heart attack But I downgraded Qt, and it's OK. Waiting for libpng/libjpeg to pass to extra or something.

I updated before reading the last few posts in this thread and my system broke because of qt-4.6.0-4-i686.pkg.tar.gz . Kde simply wouldn't start anymore.
Had to rollback to previous qt-4.6.0-3-i686.pkg.tar.gz to have my kde back in action.

I just stopped using kde-4.4-unstable in favor of kde-unstable. When moving my system to kde-unstable, I couldn't find the apr-util dependency and I had to rely on AUR to get it. Is that normal or did I do something wrong? I am thinking about upgrading my laptop to kde-unstable but I don't want to rely on AUR unless I have to.

You need "apr-util-iodbc" to get it working with KDE 4.4 properly, looking it up on AUR is nothing to worry about. As for the libjpeg/libpng, I've provided PKGBUILD for libpng in this thread which made the latest QT release working for me...

I installed it from AUR but I'm assuming that when KDE 4.4 goes final, there won't be a reliance on AUR for that package? I was just wondering if it will be available in Extra so I don't have to have (yet another) dependency on AUR. Thanks!

Nothing in the official stable repositories ever depends on the AUR.

Ok, safe to upgrade now if your mirror is synced. Akonadi, nepomuk, strigi works, lancelot works ok now, no problems so far...

I get the following error:
warning: cannot resolve "redland>=1.0.10-2", a dependency of "soprano"
Does anyone else have that issue?
I am not sure if my box is working despite that because I updated all the other packages but I did it remotely via SSH because I'm not home right now to see what's working or not.

The polkit issue remains :-/ And we don't have the PolicyKit icon on SystemSettings.

I have that too and after upgrading it works just fine. Guess we'll have to wait for the updated redland until the RC2 hits the kde-unstable repo.

How do you deal with libpng and liibjpeg 1.4 dependency? Half of my applications does not work because of this.
EDIT: Solved this by installing old versions from AUR

As I've said b4 ur mirrors have to be synced. If they are synced then I don't know why do u have problems with dep checks because I haven't had any...
@madcat AFAIK this is RC2
@flamelab - Yep, polkit missing in system settings (but I don't know if it was supposed to be there, it was in 4.3.4 though). And still I can't access k3b setup from system settings.

When I synced and tried to update, I got this error:
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: kdelibs: requires phonon
:: qtscriptgenerator: requires phonon
So, I tried to install phonon and got this:
:: phonon conflicts with qt. Remove qt? [Y/n] n
So, is it safe to remove qt and let phonon install what it needs?
Thanks!!!

So, is it safe to remove qt and let phonon install what it needs?
Phonon is split into a separate package, the new qt depends on it and phonon also conflicts with the old qt. Thus, it is "safe" in the sense that you will have to do this in order to install the release candidate. However, installing packages from [testing] or [kde-unstable] is by definition unsafe.

I think I solved that one by Rd-ing qt then instaling phonon then installing new qt... Something like that, it was a long time ago

Am I missing something here or there are some packages missing in the i686 mirrors for RC2? For example the different plasma addons?

My machine is completely dead right now, libpng errors, and KDM won't even start. I've tried to update yesterday and just earlier this morning and there is nothing new in the repos.

mir.archlinux.fr and mirrors.kernel.org are up to date, u could try them

I tried both of those repositories and neither offer me anything new, other than an update for the kernel. As soon as I go to update it complains about not being able to resolve redland>=1.0.10-2 which is a dependency of Soprano. Libpng hasn't been updated not even with those repositories, so KDM doesn't start, and when I do "startx" it bombs back to the command line complaining about libpng.

Use the libpng 1.4 and libjpeg 8 from testing. Then you should be able to start kde.
After that I recomend installing libpng12 and libjpeg7 packages from AUR because all apps from stable are
compiled against them.

I'm confused about the AUR part. I thought all apps from stable didn't require anything from AUR?

As I said: wait until it's announced on arch-dev-public. E.g. i686 is not complete yet and of course you will need testing (and know how to use that one).

Yes - that is correct, but for kde4 sc rc2 you need libpng1.4 and libjpeg8 from testing repo. If you will upgrade them
your apps from stable will still need the 1.2 and 7 libraries. In order to install both versions you will have to use AUR.

When the 1.2 and 7 libraries are updated in stable, will they automatically replace the packages I downloaded from AUR? Having a mix of packages from stable, testing and AUR will be too confusing to me in the long run.
Thanks by the way.
