I'm having the same problem. Sound worked last night after some updates...fails today after some more updates.
This is true with multiple players (mplayer/audacious/vlc).
I don't even get the beep I usually get when I shutdown.
Here are the updates that you and I have in common.

My sound works now...not sure what happened. Essentially I left the computer alone for around 12 hours and now my sound is back, including after reboots, where before I would still have no sound.

The problem I've had with the xine engine is that it tends to default to my USB headphones, while everything else uses the onboard sound. So if I want to use flash, for instance, I have to unplug the headphones and reboot. ![]()

In my case xine has absolutely nothing to do with it...its not installed, nor do I use usb headphones (I like my Shures
).
So I'm still at a loss as to why it died in the first place.

.....I still can't hear anything! And I have rebooted several times....

Problem solved!Maybe it's not caused by the update...But the sound did stop working after update!I just reconfiged the/etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf and /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf ,and my sound comes back!
