Try to uninstall fam and remove it from re.conf and install gamin, which isn't needed to be in rc.conf. There should be some article at Wiki.

The documentation I read appears to be outdated and thus don't apply to 2009.08 and later.

I am using 2009.08, but it doesn't matter, but I have no problem with gamin :-)
EDIT: Sorry for miserable English, I should read it twice when I am communicating with a native speaker and stop using word "but" twice in one sentence :-)
