Reinstalling metacity fixed the issue. Thanks. But gnome-shel still won't run and if I try to use mutter as the WM the desktop becomes painfully slow. Probably because of the radeon drivers.

i't might be also because gnome-shell 2.29.0 doesn't support well clutter 1.2.0. future version will do.
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.
