Printer Paused - "/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed" [SOLVED]

Nothing that I try to print with CUPS goes to the printer, it just sits in the job list saying "Pending".
CUPS says the status of my printer is:
Paused - "/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed"
Restarting CUPS or DBus does nothing.

I didn't notice any updates relating to CUPS so am not sure what exactly happened. I sync and update many times a day, so at least I know a timeframe. The last time I printed something was at:
Sat 21 Nov 2009 03:05:18 PM PST

Now nothing works. I really need to get this working, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Near as I can tell it is not indeed a package update problem, sorry. I suppose this is in the wrong forum now.

EDIT2:

Anyone else who gets this problem and freaks out: All you have to do is go to the CUPS printer administration page and click "Resume Printer".

I am having this same issue but simply resuming the printer won't change anything....

I always see this message when I try printing ....

"/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed"

but if I just call it from the command line, it shows me my printer info...

Files created in /var/spool/cups have permissions that don't allow them to be read by a normal user, and changing them after the fact doesn't seem to have any effect (when attempting to resume the printer).

Changing the permissions of /usr/lib/cups/backend/hal and /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb didn't seem to have any effect.

This is still not solved for me, I can't print anything. Resuming the printer does not work. My printer is an HP network printer (no usb).

All jobs pause the printer with /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed. Dbus is installed and running.

hp-toolbox returns error: Unable to communicate with device (code=12): hp:/net/HP_LaserJet_M1120n_MFP?zc=NPI17FD5E error: Device not found

This is very very strange because on my other arch pc with the same packages and the same settings the printer works normally.

Can anyone help?

Ok, after hours of searching, i finally solved this. In case anyone else has the same problem, my problem was fixed after installing avahi daemon.

Another thing to verify...and this DID solve my issue, is to ensure that the avahi-daemon comes BEFORE cups or other printer related stuff in the rc.conf.  (In my case the ptal-init as well.)  As soon as the avahi daemon is placed ahead of cups and ptal, suddenly ALL of my printing issues went away.

My example here:

DAEMONS=(syslog-ng crond dbus networkmanager ntpd  avahi-daemon ptal-init @cups clamav sensors dropboxd netfs)

Stop all jobs, stop cups, and then start cups, returns:

"/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed"

Avahi-daemon restart and same message.

I don't know if this is of any help, but since the last HPLIP update, I noticed that the printer must NOT been in "sleep" mode, or otherwise 'hp-makeuri <your printer ip>' and 'hp-check -t' fail for the printer that I'm connecting to. I'm using an IP connection.

If I walk over to the printer and then press some buttons on the printer, HPLIP/Cups starts to work.

I know, it defies logic, but as far as I can tell, this is the only way I can print. Btw: my printing was working fine until the last update to HPLIP, if I'm not mistaken.

I had the same problem after the upgrade to kubuntu 12.04

Since I ended up in this thread after a long time of looking for answers, I thought I'd just have to put my solution here.

1. reinstalled, purged, installed, and whatnot, days went by,   I  w e n t  n u t s  !

2. put lp into my user group in system settings ... didn't do anything, or did it now?

3. read about /usr/lib/cups/backend not being chmodded right and that did the trick for me! chmodded the folder (and its contents) 755, so rwxr-xr-x I think, and everything was fine!

ajoker's output makes sense now, doesn't it?

Anyone else who gets this problem and freaks out: All you have to do is go to the CUPS printer administration page and click "Resume Printer".

Or you can do the same in command line :

sudo cupsenable HP-LaserJet-1018

Where HP-LaserJet-1018 is the name of your printer like you can find in the cups printer adminsitration
