nethack

Anyone else here addicted to nethack?
I began playing like a week or two ago, and I've probably played at least 500 games. I'm an elven wizard, but it is SO infuriating dying all the time. Any tips, fantastic achievements, quotes?
Anyone know a similar game that's, I don't know...easier to win?!?!!?

Nethack quotes:
you consume stir fried large kobold!
Ecch - that must have been poisonous!  This yellow mold corpse tastes terrible!  You finish eating the yellow mold corpse.  Oh wow!  Great stuff!
The spell hits the little dog!  You kill the little dog!  Splat!
You trigger a falling rock trap! Fortunately, you are wearing a hard helmet. The rock bounces off. Sirius is hit by a falling rock! Sirius is killed!

that last one is from my friend, who is (nearly) as addicted as me.

Re: nethack

I played an awful lot of nethack about a year ago, had a 3 months break, discovered patches and went on a patching frenzy, had another 3 months break due to patches conflicting with another… Let's just say I'm not playing that much anymore.

I always found the wizard types easier too despite what various sources wanted me to believe, but I hardly got beyond the Gnomish Mines anyways, so there. smile

Re: nethack

I started to play in november last year, and have been addicted quickly. I was even forgetting that I had a "real life" !!! So I took a break for some months and started to play again recently, some hours once in a while. I enjoy this game a lot, though I've only been playing a human lawful valk. The deepest I've ever been is Medusa level, and I finished the quest (which is said to be fairly easy) a pair of times. I play nethack patched with menucolors, dumplog, hpmon, and dark_gray.

Re: nethack

I really recommend the nethack-patch package since it gives you things like menu colors and such. No gameplay is changed, just prettied up a bit.

Also you may want to look at hearse, which exchanges bones files online.

I maintain nethack stuff and most other roguelikes, so come around to #archlinux-gaming on irc if you need any help. smile

Re: nethack

I really wanted to get into it, but just never have been able to, even by reading a tutorial. Maybe I need someone who knows how to play to sit down with me and help me with stuff. hmm

On that note, how did you learn? Do you have a tutorial you recommend?

Re: nethack

If you're not afraid to have the entire game spoiled, check out the nethack wiki. Otherwise read the nethack guide book which goes over the commands. If you enjoy the discovery process and learning from doing, you could easily spend years learning the ins and outs.

My friend who got me addicted also gave me a lot of tips. Like Daenyth said, though, I think the nethack wiki is AMAZING--just haven't had time to figure out what I actually need to know. Personally, I don't think I've actually made it past the gnomish mines sad. Here's another helpful site, for more general gameplay tips: http://www.nethack.org/v343/Guidebook.html.

Oh, btw--I'm using elven wizard, but it seems the wizard isn't actually recommended for a beginner, which I can understand. Actually, I'm going to go play nethack right now...

I really recommend Crawl Stone Soup. It is maybe as difficult to win as Nethack (more or less), but I find it easier to play. Not as "arcane" as nethack. Beautiful interface, and in general just an excellent game (if you like Nethack, at least there is a good chance you like stone-soup)

Re: nethack

I second alterecco about stone soup. I started playing it a week ago and I love it. I also played powder (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=22097) before, which is a bit more accessible.

Re: nethack

I think I will try out stone soup, although I'd like to "accomplish" nethack first. Anyone who knows me though knows I'm going to try writing my own video game once I stop procrastinating. wink

Re: nethack

I'm a huge nethack fan.  I play at least one game a week and go through phases where I play several times a day.  Some of the benefits of nethack are that  you can play over ssh (which means I can play from work/school).  I'm really impressed with the complexity and humour involved in the game, I also really like that it's a fantasy game that allows you to use your imagination to it's fullest extent!  for example, I have no idea what a kobald or a lichen look like other than letters on a screen, so I imagine them looking like a lizard demon or a moss monster or whatever.  plus it gets really thrilling when you're near death and you start throwing random things, drinking random things, and praying and getting miraculously saved.  however, you have to get really used to dying, I think I've survived to level 14 once in all the time that I've played.

I also like that no 2 games are similar, when going into the dungeons of doom you have no idea what to expect and you have to stay on your toes and get clever.  probably my favorite game of all time.
