Issue with Xorg: Crash on exit/attempting to open Virtual Console

Hi everyone.

I have a problem with Xorg. Pretty much everything seems to be working fine, except for one thing:
Whenever I 'switch away' from the Xserver (issuing the 'reboot' command, attempting to open a Virutal Console using Ctrl + Alt + F1/F2/etc, or issuing 'pkill X' in the console) my screen gets kind of locked and displays a weird animation for some time (colours changing, fading, etc.), then it stops and the screen remains black. Using Alt + F7 always unlocks the screen and brings me back to the Xserver though.

The issue comes up in xterm, Gnome, and scrotwm, so I guess it really is a Xorg issue and not caused by the DE/WM.

Photos of the animation:

The guys here seemingly have/had the same issue, as the last post reports activating KMS fixed the issue I checked and it is already activated. Further research on the web came up with nothing useful apart from the fact that the issue came up now and then over the past few years. No solution to be found however.

Any insight as to how to fix the issue would be greatly appreciated.
Following some information on my system as well as the Xorg.conf file and the log file.

System:
Acer Aspire 7740G
Intel i5 430
ATI Mobility Radeon HD5740

Xorg.conf

Xorg.0.log
Part 1: http://pastebin.com/S5KQDx4q
Part 2: http://pastebin.com/EinRck1t

Thanks in advance for any advice or help,
Ocean

That's the reboot command issued via the DE, not via a terminal, right? Else it would be very strange.
The Xorg.log files look cut off at the end - is that really what you get after a crash?
If it's possible you could ssh into the machine from elsewhere, then startx from the remote machine, then provoke the X crash. That might give you some information in the terminal of the remote machine.

Re: Issue with Xorg: Crash on exit/attempting to open Virtual Console

You're right, there was something lacking with the log, my fault for not checking the paste. Added it in as a second paste found here:
http://pastebin.com/EinRck1t

And the crash does occur when I enter 'reboot' in a terminal as well. To me it looks like it happens everytime the Xserver gets... well shoved into the background.

I'll try the ssh thing, might take a little while though.

So does the reboot command work? I.e. do you get the weird animation and then the machine reboots, or do you get the weird animation and then the machine hangs until Alt+F7 brings you back to the X server?

Re: Issue with Xorg: Crash on exit/attempting to open Virtual Console

The command itself works properly, the animation appears and the reboot process continues in the background.
