Easily switch between proxy and no proxy

I am looking for an easy way to swithc between using a proxy server (at work) and a direct connection (at home).   I used to use a script that ran a sed on a bunch of configuration files to switch their network settings, but it would be much easier to point them all at something running locally and only need to change that.  Any ideas?

Well if it's simply web browsing: with Opera it's as simple as F12.

No, not just web browsing.   There is the web browser, email client, feed reader, podcast downloader, ...

Instead of switch, you could use both! By setting up various rules and settings and configurations. Which all depends on how your VPN is setup. What exactly do you need for work and what is for home?

Re: Easily switch between proxy and no proxy

At work I am behind a proxy that requires authentication.   At home, I connect directly.   I can easily switch settings in (e.g.) firefox or any other individual program based on where I am, but there is becoming just too many things I want to change.

I was thinking that maybe I could set up some sort of locally running proxy that stood between me an the internet and I would point all programs at that and then I would only ever need to change the settings in one place.

Re: Easily switch between proxy and no proxy

I'm trying to do exactly the same.  I've got it set up using squid, but I'm having issues with ports other than http. I've posted my problem along with my config files at http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=96471, so you can copy them to use as a starting point.  The way mine works at the moment is I've set up squid and iptables so that an app, e.g. firefox, sees it as a direct connection regardless of where I am. At work I simply start the squid and iptables services, and at home I stop them.

Re: Easily switch between proxy and no proxy

I'm using netcfg and start my proxy daemons in the POST_UP (and stop them in the PRE_DOWN) sections of the profiles that need them. Proxies start when I connect to the work network and don't get started on the home network.
