[solved] Internet traffic slowly tails off to zero

Can anyone think of a cause for internet traffic starting off fine and slowly tailing down to zero?

For example, I start a download: it starts at 400 MB/s and before I know it's 200 b/s and falling.  Then it just stops.

It's not firewall related because unloading the firewall does nothing.

It works fine intermittently (but 99% of the time not) sometimes it will be fine for about a minute, then it's screwed again.

Also, I can ping google.com just fine.

It's really bugging me that I can't find any solution or even think what could be causing it.

It's just so inconsistent.

400 MB/s?? holy sh...
rather unspecific as well, but have you tried disabling ipv6?

well, reading the wiki again, it probably won't be of help in your case.

Maybe that should be 400 KB/s Let me check IPV6 = IPV6 is already disabled.

My main hair-puller is I can't even think of how I could diagnose the problem ><

are you the only one using the internet (no other lan machine), and what about any other application running in the background, check the output of netstat -n, also, to make sure that this is your system's problem and not the networks, try downloading with any other machine (wired if possible)

Problem was being caused by a poorly uninstalled firewall.  It was a windows problem but I didn't want to say that at the start and complicate the issue!
