Tonido - your own Personal Cloud

I was searching for cloud computing and found Tonido supporting Archlinux
http://tonido.com
http://tonido.com/application_download.html

I have used Tonido for few weeks and its an interesting and well thought cloud system where your own PC is the "server". What is missing is to update the arch package to support the latest libpng/libjpeg. Where to find the source?

did any of you manage to get it running. I got as far as getting Tonido installed but when i try to starte the daemon via /etc/rc.d/tonidod start nothing happens. Also adding the daemon to rc.conf doesn't work

any suggestions

I'm going to have to set up an old box I've got a few cities away with this and see how it goes. I'll be very interested to get this running and check it out. For now, a simple subscription to this thread will have to suffice.

When I found tonido I was lucky one of my machines was not upgraded requiring newer configure for libpng/libjpeg, letting me test the system. Very interesting and useful package. Lets hope we can get it upgraded.

I grabbed the package off of tonido's site yesterday, and I have to say this is rather snazzy. My one gripe at the moment is that Tonido Torrent absolutely kills my internet with connections, but to be fair I haven't tried to fix things router-side yet. I just wish that Tonido Torrent had a few more configurational options.

But as far as everything else, I'm very happy with it. This may actually be a good solution for my distributed calendar/task-list and money manager issue. The jukebox, file-hosting, and torrent management are just pluses from there. The blog would be too, but I never really come up blog posts worth sharing.

Too sad that it seems to be closed source. The package is not really that valid (/usr/local?) and only available for i686. I hope owncloud.org will be usable some day.

Gotta agree with you there, Johannes. I was pleasantly surprised to see our wonderful little Arch logo up there.

Also, while mulling all this Tonido stuff over, a concern hit me: Tonido runs off the root account. I'm not even slightly knowledgeable about process hijacking, but is it possible for a malicious person to gain root access via exploiting Tonido in some fashion? I assume that this is at least part of the reasoning behind having other services like httpd run as their own user and group.

And I never heard of owncloud.org before - am particularly entranced by their roadmap:

Ok, turns out you don't have to run it as root. I just assumed you had to since the method of starting it is '/etc/rc.d/tonidod start'. I'm kind of used to needing to throw down a sudo on anything inside of /etc/rc.d/

Works on Arch Linux on Intel x86
