[SOLVED]Is it possible to be connected to 2 networks at the same time?

Hi all, the question is maybe trivial. I think I should, if they are different networks. I mean...i need to be connected to 2 networks, one on internet one for net analysis.

I'm using wicd, but if i'm trying to be connected to both...it doesn't work.

Can you please give me some ideas?

Thanks in advance

You either need a second card, or, as i understand it, make two virtual ethernet devices out of your one physical device, for instance with TUN/TAP.
If you already have two network devices you should be able to connect to both networks. Maybe wicd is not the way to go though. I'd try netcfg. It's a great tool.

Obviously I have an ethernet and a wifi card and i need to be connected with both to 2 different networks. I like wicd a lot...but maybe it's not possible to manage this situation.

There is no reason why you can't have multiple interfaces on one machine, most routers have at least two. I don't use wicd though as demian mentioned netcfg should work.

Not obvious at all actually. smile

Make sure that whatever net utility you decide to use can handle the routing table correctly - you will need a default route to the internet, and a custom route for the other traffic.

Perhaps you'd like to share your solution for the next person who wants to know? wink

yes, sure...sorry...I tried another network manager, as in the first reply: the kde applet (based on networkmanager) and it was managing correctly both networks, despite wicd.
