with acpi=off I can't start Xorg on Thinkpad R31

Hi,

I'm new to Arch linux, and I've decided to install Arch to my old Thinkpad R31.
Since the first boot when my screen went blank, I was forced to use the acpi=off option in Grub when booting.
All went fine, till I've got to the part of using the Xorg server.

Because of the graphics used in R31,

lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82830 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller] (rev 04)

I've installed the "xf86-video-intel" ver=2.10.0-1 .

Then I'm getting this when trying to execute 'startx':

'modprobe i915' or 'startx'
WARNING: Error inserting i2c_core (/lib/modules/2.6.33-ARCH/kernel/drivers/i2c/i2c-core.ko): No such device
WARNING: Error inserting button (/lib/modules/2.6.33-ARCH/kernel/drivers/acpi/button.ko): No such device
WARNING: Error inserting i2c_algo_bit (/lib/modules/2.6.33-ARCH/kernel/drivers/i2c/algos/i2c-algo-bit.ko): No such device
WARNING: Error inserting agpgart (/lib/modules/2.6.33-ARCH/kernel/drivers/char/agp/agpgart.ko): No such device
WARNING: Error inserting drm (/lib/modules/2.6.33-ARCH/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/drm.ko): No such device
WARNING: Error inserting drm_kms_helper (/lib/modules/2.6.33-ARCH/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/drm_kms_helper.ko): No such device
FATAL: Error inserting i915 (/lib/modules/2.6.33-ARCH/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915.ko): No such device

It is somehow related to that Grub option acpi=off , because if I disable this ACPI option, though the screen is going to blank, I'm still able to log in through ssh. And then if I try to execute 'startx' through ssh, it remains running (but is still unusable on the R31's main screen), doesn't crash as before when used ACPI option.

I've found other similar issue here http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 59#p757659 , but the way eg4matze solved at his X30 doesn't work for me, as if I remove the acpi=off option, the screen is dead/blank.
I've read elsewhere, that some people used the Intel legacy driver, but I can't find this driver anymore in the repo's.

Is it possible to fix this somehow?

Thanks in advance,

I think you need to remove 'acpi=off ' add 'i915.modeset=0' and downgrade to xf86-video-intel 2.9.1-1

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your advice.
It works great.

Anyway, does this mean that I'll be forced to use this 2.9.1-1 for eternity?

I doubt it. Some of the old intel 8xx chipset do not fully support KMS.  Hopefully support will get added in 2.11.x or later.

KMS? What is it?
