So i've had this dongle for a few months, and it took a while to get it working but it's been working flawlessely until a week ago.
So every now and then, the light on the dongle will go off. I check iwconfig and it says it's still up and still connected to my router. The light will randomly come back on and start flashing, and eventually the connection comes back after a few mins.
So, i know there's nothing wrong with my router, since my phone can still access the internet from the router. I'm not running any encryption and i'm using Wireless N mode with channel 11. I can't remember what i upgraded which might have caused this. No new kernel builds or anything...
Here's the dmesg output

Are you shure, that kernel wasn't upgraded? Users often have problems with RT2870, because kernel uses 2800 instead it. What about
lsmod | grep 'rt'

Yeah i'm running zen kernel that i built back in March.
Here's the lsmod output
[mountainjew@archy ~]$ lsmod | grep 'rt'
rt2870sta 523191 1
usbcore 121608 8 snd_usb_audio,snd_usb_lib,uvcvideo,usbhid,ohci_hcd,ehci_hcd,rt2870sta
rtc_cmos 7822 0
rtc_core 12359 1 rtc_cmos
rtc_lib 1586 1 rtc_core
I did however build kernel26-ck a while ago and had to compile the rt2870 module again, but afaik it shouldn't affect the module i'm using on the zen kernel.

That looks normal. In fact i don't know what the problem is. The only thing I can say - I have had such "symptoms" when I changed my router settings and set mode "802.11g only". You write, that use 802.11n mode with your phone. As far as I know, today only Samsung Wave supports 802.11n mode. So you're probably using g/n. Try to change it on auto mode, only n mode or any other, and then restart the router.

Well my phone does support Wireless N, but it's yet to be activated. I'm definately running Wireless N on my dongle though:
[mountainjew@archy ~]$ iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
ra0 Ralink STA ESSID:"dlink46" Nickname:"RT2870STA"
Mode:Managed Frequency=2.462 GHz Access Point: 1C:AF:F7:25:E6:DE
Bit Rate=270 Mb/s
RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Link Quality=97/100 Signal level:-60 dBm Noise level:-71 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
I set the wireless mode in the RT2870STA config to use n/g mixed. I think i'll try it on just N and see how it goes and recompile the module. The funny thing is it only comes back to life when i try to ping or access a site. If i do nothing, it stays off. I'm wondering if maybe it's a power saving bug. Gonna have to look at how to disable that.
Thanks for the replies.

Please, write here if you will solve the problem

you can use rt2800usb.ko - but it will be slower than rt2870sta. I installed the firmware from ralink, disabled the staging-driver and modprobed rt2800usb. Now it works - but its very slow and i get more disconnects.
Damn kernel-developer... =/

I am getting hard disconnects with these lines in dmesg:

[ 251.956133] RtmpOSNetDevDetach(): RtmpOSNetDeviceDetach(), dev->name=wlan0!
[ 251.956183] device disconnected
The last line "device disconnected" is repeated a few thousands times and then there is:
ERROR! H2M_MAILBOX still hold by MCU. command fail
I don't know if it's related to the OP bug but I am experiencing this since when I replaced the firmware files with those provided by Arch Linux

I recently fixed the AUR rt2870 package, maybe you'd like to give it a try.
(Both staging + AUR drivers work for me)

to all: the KRAUN usb dongle sucks bad, it is a hardware issue.
return it to the manufacturer
