External HDD plugged via USB mounted as read-only

I have plugged an external HDD and HAL detected it and auto mounted to /media. I can access the files, but when I try to delete and create files, it says "read-only file system". How can I say HAL to mount as read/write always?

Search for Hal on the Wiki. Then read the Troubleshooting section of the page. The information is out there.

what filesystem does it have? maybe is ntfs and you don't have ntfs-3g installed

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Also check the read/write permissions of the drive.
