protecting privacy when surfing the web

Hi guys,

how does a linux geek protect his privacy when surfing in open webs via wifi?
Some kind of homemade vpn? Just Scroogle? Tor?
Is there a proper way to do this all with Open-Source-Software or do you have to pay to secure your privacy?
How do you do it?

For me tor should not be used. Because the last time I checked you could have a security risk if you are on a tor network while surfing on you bank account.

Scroogle with SSL would only allow you to prevent eavesdropping on google search. But if you want to check your bank account you are insane.

A homemade vpn would be a good way. if you have one of those routers that allow vpn (linksys wrt54g with a modified firmware). It is just a matter of time to
set those up. And as usual once it's setup it won't break easily. But you would be throttled by your home bandwidth.

Otherwise if you don't want to spend the time settings those up you could pay for a real vpn or don't surf on critical website (bank account, important things. etc.) or give up paranoia. Or my best and easiest solution kill all human so no more eavesdropping ^^

i use an openssh tunnel with dynamic port forwarding.

You simply have to change the proxy settings in your browsers/mail-clients/whatever or you could use tsocks.
