Re: F@H Arch Linux Team - Recruitment & Stats thread - HELP US !.

I have started putting my graphics card to use for folding when I'm not at my computer. I have found that running a compositing window manager and the GPU client causes lockups, otherwise I'd have it running most the time. My 9800GT is 3.5x to 4x faster at folding than my CPU and takes maybe 60% of the power to run at full tilt (I have a recent version of the 9800GT that maxes out at 75 watts) so it makes sense to run that instead of the SMP client. Running it part time I should easily be able to contribute an average of 1000 points a day.

Nice, but at the current speed of 293 points in 10 days it will cost me about 34,130 days (= ±93½ years) to reach one million points. I don't think Folding@home still exists by then.

And, taking my current age into account, I will be 124½ when reaching that milestone. I'll try, but I don't think I can manage that.

I just added 22 cores (various Intel C4Q/i5/i7/Xeons) back into the mix. That should help out a little!

Folding is like giving a gift.  It's the thought that counts and you give what you can.  What kind of cpu do you have?  32 bit or 64 bit, and single core or multiple core?

@ quad3d@work.   Great.  Every core helps.

Almost two years ago, my mother-in-law was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrigs disease).  Last weekend we drove to Missouri for what will probably be our final visit with her.  It was shocking how much she had deteriated since last August.  Since ALS is one of the diseases caused by protien mis-folding, I now have a renewed resolve for folding.  I was starting to get tired of folding, but if F@H can help in even the slightest amount in preventing something like this, then I'm in.

Of course, I was just making a bit fun of this "contest", but I'm fine with it. I've an Intel Atom N270 @ 1.60 GHz, 32 bit, single core (supports hyperthreading, but as the Wiki recommends, I'm using just one process for folding). That said, I don't notice the presence of F@H at all (apart from the CPU status indicator on my IceWM task bar).

Sad to hear that. My own mother died of cancer 15 years ago. Best wishes!

There's a GPU howto?

I'm running 64bit Arch on AMD X4 cpus and stumbled through all the AUR dependencies for the GPU client.  I'm kind of surprised it work though, on both machines no less.  One starts fine via "/etc/foldingathome-gpu start", but the other does not.  It does work from the command line though.  Haven't had time to check into it.

If I remember correctly, there were a few gotchas. I think two of the PKGBUILDS just didn't work and one didn't install cleanly until manually removing some libs apparently install by a previous AUR pkg.  One I think the download src path changed, and the other, had a yes/no prompt hidden from view.  I meant to go through it again and document it better for myself and report these problems to the pkg owners, but as usual.....

My stats are listed here.

As for borging..
A borg is of course, a race from Star Trek:

wikipedia wrote:

...The Borg inhabit a vast region of space in the Delta Quadrant of the galaxy, possessing millions of vessels and having conquered thousands of systems....This is achieved through forced assimilation, a process which transforms individuals and technology into Borg, enhancing, and simultaneously controlling, individuals..

Similarly, one may assimilate a PC for the purpose of folding, by downloading (or otherwise installing) the client to the machine, installing it as a service and of course, assigning their own ID and team number to the f@h client.
The assimilated machine is then referred to as a 'borg', whereas the act of assimilation itself would be referred to as 'borging' the machine.

A computer lab, workplace or library are some places where borgs may be had. Of course, ensure you have permission first. And yes, borging can become an obsession, or at least an addiction..

Well when I built all the packages on my system they went through without a hitch..

The one where the download source changed (nvcuda) I fixed before I posted about the client back a page. Like around April 18th or so..

And I just fixed the other where I had a yes/no prompt was being hid. Although in my defense I never got a prompt when I tested the packages on my system...even when I rebuilt the package just now. But I removed the "&> /dev/null" anyway just encase.

As far as other packages conflicting I really cant control that...
Any more issues/questions about it post here and I'll do what I can tongue

and its "/etc/rc.d/foldingathome-gpu start" smile

Hi all,

Ok so this is a new post regarding the 32bit host gpu client.

I have followed the Pudge howto in post 341 to the letter (with new versions of the fedora stuff) and when I check the client I get this..

[simon@disco folding]$

I have checked the missing dll and although the file is there it is zero bytes.

The /usr/local/cuda stuff is all there.

Can anybody help with this, my friend has donated an 8800gts to the cause, but as yet is un-utilised!

All the best,

Diesel1.

EDIT: I was wondering if there is a problem with this being a 939 pin Athlon64 chip running i686 Arch?
The file issue seems to be due to lib32-nvidia-utils not being installed.  I bet I have something installed incorrectly!

Hi all,

Having installed Arch 64 on the 8800 GTS machine (it is a webserver too) and following whaevr's 'micro howto' smile I now have the gpu client folding.

This being a single core machine, you notice a lot more that the system is 'busy'!

All the best,

Diesel1.

I just noticed that my console when im running FAH doesnt report anything anymore, It got stuck in 6% completion, like so:

starting mdrun 'Mutant_scan'

Been like that for more than 12 hours, and if you see past, is that a sign that FAH crashed? my processor use its still 100%
