dhcpcd times out waiting for carrier (eth0) (solved)

Quite odd, I've never had this problem before. Hopefully someone can help.

My system is up to date. I've never had to mess with the standard DHCP setup, so I'm a noob when it comes to networking.

eth0 shows in "ifconfig -a", but there is no IP address. I tried setting up a static IP per the instructions in the wiki, to no avail (I have the nameservers and such on my Arch laptop, but it doesn't work when I transfer it over).

Sometimes I get the message "no interfaces have a carrier," and then dhcpcd forks to the background.

What are my options, besides bashing my head against my keyboard repeatedly? Is it possible that some configuration file I'm not aware of has become corrupted?

Let me ask the classic question -- is the cable plugged in?
I ask only half way tongue-in-cheek, you would not believe how many times other engineers and I have had that be the problem.

(Does your NIC have an LED showing carrier / activity? How about the router? Does the cable work with other computers?)

Doh... it wasn't plugged in. Thank you big_smile

Unfortunately, I have mobility issues, so I wasn't able to check that right off the bat---but sure enough, you were right.

As a side note, and mostly off-topic: how hard do you think it would be to design a wheelchair-friendly tower mount of some sort? I've had similar trouble a few times over the years, and there's not always someone else around to fiddle with the back of the computer smile

Sorry, thats not really my forte'  You might look into rack mount equipment and a portable rack.  It might even be possible to add rack slides -- provided there is a means to keep it from tipping forward.

How about portable racks like the ones here: http://www.sweetwater.com/c459--Portable_Rack_Cases

Thanks again---now I'm inspired to look into it. Though it may not be your forté, something told me you would have a better idea than I would big_smile

Marking this as solved, take care.
