I have a Trendnet TEW 424ub wireless usb adapter with a realtek 8187b chipset.
It works full speed , 300 kb/s, on windows 7.
The "rtl8187" module that comes with the kernel doesn't work really well. I can't get full speed and it keeps dropping to 5kb/s for some minutes every now and then.
I'm on arch 64bit so I tried installing the XP 64bit drivers from the official realtek site through ndiswrapper but I can't get it working, there's no wlan0 device.
I blacklisted the rtl8187 driver in /etc/rc.conf and added ndiswrapper to the modules.
When I get to the desktop I try to connect with wicd but there's no devices available. I check "iwconfig" and there's no wlan0 device. I check "ndiswrapper -l" and it reports that the adapter is detected so I try to load ndiswrapper with modprobe, sometimes on this step the desktop just crashes and I've to ctrl+alt+F1 and do a reboot. When it doesn't crash it simply does nothing, still no wlan0 device detected.
I've been searching for a solution to this problem for days. I posted on the Ubuntuforums with no luck. I searched all over the net and there's a few cases out there like mine but no solutions.
Am I doing something wrong? Maybe it's because I'm on 64bit...
I tried Ubuntu 10.04 and It does the same thing. I tried PCLinuxOS too and it works much better there, I can get full speed almost all the time, but sometimes it drops too, but less than in arch or ubuntu.
