File transfer through SSH stops all connections temporarily

I have a personal server running, which I am experiencing this rather annoying issue with.

Whenever I try to move large files to the server via SFTP, rsync, etc. the computer will temporarily stop all connections to the server. This usually lasts about 5 minutes. During this time I am unable to ping the server (destination unreachable). Currently moving the StarCraft 2 installer to the server and so far it has stopped five times. This is very annoying, as it also closes down access to some small websites and Mumble voice chat.

I honestly got no idea what is wrong here. Anyone know how I can possibly fix this? If I need to provide more details, please let me know. Thank you.

when uploading your files, does your server stop, or does the client? also, is there any iptables policy of any other network policy of any kind on each end.

you can configure your tcp parameters for a smaller receiving window size on the server or on the client to see if it helps anything.

also, check /var/log/everything.log for anything useful.

Try to ping your gateway. If that is down also, then it might be a router/modem issue

Indeed, cheap routers tend to perform poorly under heavy load. One of my previous routers used to just hang under load. It would be functional again only after hard reboot.

#3 Are there any QoS defined for a standard Arch install? Could that be the reason the network stops temporarily when a certain limit has been reached?

#3,#4 I guess that could be the problem, but I did not have this issue when I ran Debian on my server. Besides, when people download large files through port 80 there are no issues.

I guess that if you have a ridiculously weak machine a scp-transfer could time out a HTTP-request, what are the servers specs?
