Does anyone succeed in installing that printer on Arch? I tried the foo2zjs driver from AUR and to compile it from http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/ but notting seem to work. I know that the firmware reach the printer because it start but I can see it in cups?

I don't have the 1000, but I do have the 1020.
I could not get the AUR version to work, but I have used the procedure at http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/ for Arch, Gentoo, and OS-X. I have done it via USB with firmware, and through an XP machine using Samba. Works great.

How to Ask Questions the Smart Way
Offline
1. install foo2zjs with all its dependencies from AUR
2. restart cups
3. switch on printer (you will hear that something has changed and the firmware has been "uploaded")
4. rmmod usblp
5. open browser --> localhost:631
6. add printer
7. before printing always unload the usblp module

I've got the LaserJet 1005, which I suspect is of a similar ilk....I had various problems with it with foo2zjs and hplip, the former not playing nicely and the latter recognising the printer but failing to print. Only after a lot of searching did I discover about 'hp-setup -i' as root, to download the necessary restrictive-licence firmware for hplip to work.

I was never successful in the past with hplip, but I didn't know that command, I will try it.
I succeeded in doing it with Ubuntu, but not Arch.

Thanks! Super it works!

I'm glad it helped - and as I now know that it wasn't a problem unique to me, I've added it to the wiki.

Owain, the HPLIP driver work fine for the linux machine and all linux machine connect to it, windows machine see it but it doesn't print anything!
The printer is on a samba server, same parameter as my ubuntu server. The ubuntu server was working with foo2zjs but doesn't print with windows machine over samba using the hplip driver!
hplip look more reliable than foo2zjs over linux machine but it appear that it doesn't like samba!

Does the attempt to print from Windows show up at all in Samba and/or CUPS log files? If it's any reassurance, my attempt to print from Windows did half-work (see here)!

The problem look similar. I only tried to print the test page. The test page appear in cups but never print! I'm out of town for the week so I won't be able to test before the end of the week! I have 2 printers on that machine, the brother printer work fine with both linux and windows, so this is something related to the printer or printer driver. Like if the printer firmware wasn't reaching the printer when using windows.

Using postscript driver on windows like HP 1200 PS driver solve the problem!
