Can't boot 2010.05-core-i686.iso on ThinkPad X201

The above iso freezes on my new ThinkPad X201 3626 - Core i5. First I've tried on USB flash transfering the image with dd. Then I connected an external USB DVD drive and tried to from the CD.

The behaviour is always the same:
- I get the boot selection i686, x86_64, etc. I tried both.
- a long list of kernel boot messages appear
- it moves to > ArchLinux
- a couple of lines later "> Waiting for Udev events to be processed"

Here the screen goes black. Something is running in the background. If I press keys at random, the CD reacts, but the display remains dark.

The install media is OK. I've tested them on a P-III desktop. Interestingly Ubuntu 10.04 CD also freezes. Sofar only Debian 5.04 CD worked. I could install a Gnome system but no Ethernet - kernel 2.6.26-2-686.

On Debian lspci says: "00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Device 10ea (rev 06)", "00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82821 Mobile PCI Bridge (rev a6)", "00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Device 0046 (rev 02)".

Anybody else encountered this problem? How should I go on installing Arch.

Try archboot:

Could you please tell me why? I mean, does the official iso has a bug, or it does not support this hardware?

Added to that, I don't have a running system to make this CD right now!

i haven't heard of any bugs in the official install media.
But your problem sounds graphics and therefore kernelrelated, so i suggested archboot since it uses a newer kernel. It probably also uses a different version of xorg etc.
What you could also try is disable kms and/or use different vga modes with your current install media.

Re: Can't boot 2010.05-core-i686.iso on ThinkPad X201

Hi

Thanks for the quick support! I managed to make a 2010.05 „2k10-R4" Archboot CD. With that I could install onto the HD but have the same problem booting from that.

Could you please give me the syntax for disable KMS and play with VGA-modes? I have LILO installed.  At its boot prompt "arch nokms vga=F00" for example?

Note that this notebook has a resolution of 1280x800.

Re: Can't boot 2010.05-core-i686.iso on ThinkPad X201

Got part of the problem solved: The kernel boot parameter is "nomodeset". Added that to the append="root=..." line in lilo.conf and now it is permenant.

The next problem seems to be the ethernet card. ifconfig shows me the device. during boot it tries to get a dhcp address - with no success. Killing the deamon and rerequesting dumps a clean output (broadcasting for a lease, offered 192.168.1.103 from ... , ... leased ..103 for 86000 seconds, MTU set to 1492"). But ifconfig does not show an ip-address, no route. DHCP-server part is OK because Win 7 and Debian 5 get an address.

lspci reports:
00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 06)
02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation WiFi Link 6000 Series (rev 35)
