Can ping localhost put can't get it in the browser

Hey Everyone,

    I'm a bit new to Linux, and just installed Archlinux for the first time. I am installing a distro that was designed specially to run Zoneminder IP camera software. It is a liveCD that has the option for a harddrive installation. Anyway, when I run the liveCD I can access Localhost all day long, phpmyadmin and the like. However, when I install the the Harddrive I can ping Localhost by name and IP but I can't get PHPmyadmin or anything else there to pull up. I'm sure it is something simple that my lack of knowledge is preventing me from seeing. I appreciate any help you can give and thank you ahead of time. Thanks.

Why are you asking about another distro here?

sudo iptables -L

Well, it's the same distro just someone customized it with Zoneminder. It says iptables command not found. Thanks.

Perhaps the webserver is not running? Just a thought.

Run

netstat -l -t -u

Should show something waiting for a connection.  If there is nothing that matches what you are trying to connect to, try starting the service/daemon with its script in /etc/rc.d/ e.g.

sudo /etc/rc.d/lighttpd start

But replace lighttpd with whatever you need to connect to.

If there is a line for what you want make sure you are using the right port number ( after the colon under "Local Address" )

ok, I tried to start httpd and here is what I get
httpd: apr_sockaddr_info_get() failed for zmhost
httpd: Cound not reliably determine server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName.

I'm not sure if that means it is already running or is having trouble...Seems like it's having trouble. Any thoughts?

After that, what does netstat say?  How about

ps -elf|grep httpd
dmesg|tail

Did you configure httpd, or does the distro explicitly configure it for you (doesn't sound like it...)?
What is this distros name, btw?
How are you trying to connect to the server (browser? address?)?
When you were using the live disc, did you use a bookmark that was already there?  If so, was it connecting to a specific port?

Specifically, I don't know the name. It's the only distro I've found that has Zoneminder integrated and working out of the box (so to speak). I have gone into a number of files to do some configuring (i.e. hosts, httpd.conf, etc) and I'm told they are read-only sooo.... In the hosts file under hostname it has 2 names listed. I have not attempted to nor do I know how to change these file settings if it is even possible. I have tried to connect to the server through the browser each time. I can ping it by name and IP through the console and the server doesn't appear to be listening on port 80 or any port for that matter. I'm fairly certain it isn't started and the loopback is what I'm getting from the ping. As to why it's not started, I can't say. THere are bookmarks on the liveCD but I was using multiple access methods to get to the webserver without any problems on the CD and no method works on the harddrive installation. It is all driven through port 80 as far as I can tell. Thanks for your help.

You have to edit the configs with sudo or as root.  Post your DAEMONS line from /etc/rc.conf and check in /var/log/syslog.log for anything relavent to httpd or apache.
