Pulseaudio over network

Hi, I have a Thinkpad R400 and I also have an ArchLinux i686 home server connected via spdif to my home sound system. When I used debian Lenny, I got really old pulseaudio server, GUI, everything - it worked though. It worked only if I was logged in via X server (graphically) locally or remotely. So I installed Arch (thinking using the same OSes can ease things ... I was so naive) and I cannot get this pulse sound server running. First of all I cannot start pavucontrol over ssh tunnel, it has to be from within logged in session. my /etc/hosts.allow:

ALL:ALL

I would like to have the pulseaudio started as a daemon, not having to start X at all. I am unable to start it though. It just says FAILED and gives no reason at all. please tell me what should I do, what how-to should I abide or... Thank you

I believe you can either start pulseaudio as its own user or as root (which is known as the system-wide-daemon). For the former, for network access you have to copy some cookie over (check the pulseaudio website's wiki). The latter isn't recommended for security issues, and I think you still have to copy a cookie.

You probably don't want to start pavucontrol over the SSH tunnel though, since that WILL require X running on the home server, as far as I know. I think you can start pavucontrol on your local machine to control the home server, assuming you've set your pulseaudio configs correctly (ie. the IP of the home server).

Well to be honest I am pretty desperate in starting the system-wide daemon. It doesn't give me any reason. Although if I edit the /etc/rc.d/pulseaudio and change the execute parameter fail=1 to fail=0 ti starts, but doesn't work. Also I am unable to set the proper output - it always falls back to Analog output, though I want digital out. Another thing - I cannot start pavucontrol on the system-wide daemon to set the right output. I would like to know what config files is it using to set it manually.

Sorry, I can't help you without more details than that, particularly what exactly you've done. If you're that desparate best to ask on the pulseaudio mailing list, but even there a post like the one you just put up won't get you anywhere.

List config file changes, etc. Don't just say "I followed such-and-such link", noone is gonna read it to try and point out where its wrong.
