why does neither the arch repo or the AUR contain the latest stable version of wmii, is there something wrong with it?

wikipedia says that the latest stable release is version 3.9 released on May 20th 2010.

is this accurate?

If you use the wmii-hg, it should pull the latest available from mercury. So there's that !!

Also, just because a newer version has been released doesn't necessarily mean it will come into the Arch repos the next day or even the next week. There are only a certain number of TUs and Devs and they will eventually get the package upgraded.

Yet another option for you is to build it yourself from source and use that. And while you are at it, maybe you can also create a PKGBUILD and put it on AUR so others can benefit from it.

thanks, you are absolutely right, i was just wondering if it was unstable and that is why people hadn't added it yet.

also I was wrong, there was another release, 3.9.2 on the 10th of june that is even more recent

so you say that wmii-hg pulls the latest release? that's nice.

Pulls everything that's in the SCM. So this might also lead to breakage in case someone commits erroneous code etc etc. Stable releases are your best bet if you don't want to be troubled "too" much. Although bugs might exist even in stable releases.

There's actually a PKGBUILD in the wmii tarball releases...

Hello,

wmii-3.9.2-1 is now available in [extra]. Thanks to the anonymous contributor who did the job!
However I have experienced a problem in updating my wmii. I'm using Arch Linux only for a few weeks now, and I'm not at all a guru of Linux, so it may be that I did something wrong. Before going further (and doing dirty things on my brand new Arch) I would like to understand what happened,and cancel it (I mean delete every change) if possible.

-U is for installing from a local package

Thank you fifafrazer. I misunderstood the man page of pacman:

OPERATIONS
-U, --upgrade
Upgrade or add package(s) to the system and install the required dependencies from
sync repos.

The next sentence is less missleading since it says 'Either a URL or file path can be specified'... hence not a package name! Sorry for the silly post.

Hi all.
For me, the previous wmii is perfect. I tried to update before but I always reverted back to the previous version.

Anyway, I would like to try again moving with the developers but set things up the way I like it.

The most annoying behavior is the different fullscreen handling.
For example, before, in chromium, when pressing win-f, chromiums window would have just fill the entire screen which is perfect. Now, for some reason, wmii sends chromium some sort of a message (I think) which causes it to go fullscreen internally and the tabs row disappears and won't come back until I open a new tab.

Can I change this behavior to the previous one?

wmii now uses EWMH hints, which in fact makes fullscreen much more reliable than it was before. YMMV, as always.

I don't think so. You'll have to convince Google to keep the tabs in fullscreen or at least to make them more easily accessible, like in Firefox.

If this is a showstopper for you, I guess you'll have to keep using 3.6.

Well, yes. There's also ~/.wmii/wmiirc_local where you can put stuff like this.

Hello!

I have one more silly question about wmii... well, not only about wmii, I have to say.

When I'm using xfce and I plug in a USB pen, it is automatically mounted and appears on the desktop without any action from myself. I would like to obtain a similar result when I'm using wmii: not necessarily an icon but at least an automatic mount and possibly an automatic action such as opening the corresponding directory with Thunar.

One difficulty is that I have never understood how this works. In particular I don't know wich device is used when a USB pen is plugged in (and this is the part of the question which has nothing to do with wmii).

Would anyone know a (simple?) way to do this?

With the latest version of wmii (3.9.2-1), wmii no longer properly reads my wmiirc file from the previous version. I have moved wmiirc from ~/.wmiirc-3.5 to ~/.wmii and renamed in wmiirc_local to no avail. I have even attempted to alter my .xinitrc file to force wmii to read the correct rc file with "exec ck-launch-session wmii -r $HOME/.wmii/wmiirc", also to no avail.

Any ideas on how to get the new wmii to find my old wmiirc file would be greatly appreciated.

In my opinion it is not surprising that the wmiirc file of 3.6 doesn't work with 3.9. Why should it? It seems to me that wmiirc is not just a list of basic preferences such as keybindings and so on, but really a bash script which tells wmii how to work. It is normal that 3.9 does not work exactly like 3.6, hence requires a different script. (EDIT: See an example in my next post.)

This is probably not what you expected to read, but when I have updated wmii I preferred to copy the new /etc/wmii/wmiirc into ~/.wmii/ and pasted into this one the key-bindings copied from my old wmiirc, and other preferences (not necessarily at the same place neither exactly with the same syntax, actually). And of course it works like a charm.

This is a typical example of what I was talking about in my previous post:

- in wmiirc for 3.6 you can find lines such as: WMII_NORMCOLORS='#888888 #222222 #333333'

- in wmiirc for 3.9 not only the theme but also the syntax has changed: export WMII_NORMCOLORS='#000000 #c1c48b #81654f'.

Before posting I have tested the old syntax in my new wmiirc file: it doesn't work! So it seems that export is mandatory for 3.9.

I'm answering to myself, to say that I finally found a way to obtain this feature in wmii. Now, when I'm using wmii and I plug in a USB pen:
- it is automatically mounted (using 'pmount') on /media/dev_name, where dev_name is the name of the correspondig device, for example sdb, sdc...;
- a button with "dev_name" appears on the right bar, with focus colors, and Thunar opens a window on /media/dev_name;
- left-clicking on this button will unmount/remount the file system of the USB pen, and toggle the button colors between normal and focus depending on the state of the file system;
- the button disapears when the USB pen is unplugged.

If somebody else is interested, I can post here the corresponding part of my wmiirc file.
