Re: Win4Lin 3

So you cant use this unless you buy a license?

Is it legit to distribute win4lin like this?

Good question. You must buy a license code. The distribution as an AL package is not suppose to be different than downloading the rpm file from Netraver as a registered member. What matters is the license code.

But to be sure, I will contact Netraverse. Moreover, I think they will be happy to know there is a distribution for Arch Linux because they concentrate on rpm distros. AL doesn't have a rpm package and requires a different distribution package what copies the rpm files, creates symlinks and runs /opt/win4lin/postinst_rpm.sh.

I received the below reply from Netraverse and says they are happy there is a Win4Lin package for Arch Linux.

: Markku,

You are more than welcome to include a package for Win4Lin for Arch Linux users. However, I have no legal objections but we ask that you disclaimer that the package is maintained by community members and not us directly as it would be difficult for us to maintain.

If there is anything we can to support you please let us know.

Re: Win4Lin 3

Direct X support is being introduced to provide full capabilities for applications like Real Player and Media Player.

I am not sure if it runs Couter Strike though Win4Lin 5 (not 3) supports Directx.

I'm afraid not, win4lin doesn't have sufficient support for directX at this time. It also has few plans for complete support to do so in the future.

There are also a few apps that need full directX (I can't think of one right now though) that will also not work properly under win4lin.

Yes, you need to patch the kernel with mki-adapter26 (for kernel-2.6.x) and Kernel-Win4lin3-x.x.x. How to do, run man page:

# man win4lin5
man page wrote:

2. Compile a Win4Lin enabled kernel.
Use mki-adapter and Kernel-Win4lin3 patches in /usr/src or  download from NeTraverse website:
http://www.netraverse.com/member/downlo … _patch.php

Patch kernel (e.g. linux-2.6.4)
# patch -p1 -b -d /usr/src/linux-2.6.4 < mki-adapter26_1_3_4.patch
# patch -p1 -b -d /usr/src/linux-2.6.4 < Kernel-Win4Lin3-2.6.4.patch

Re: Win4Lin 3

So, how do the speeds of Win4Lin compare to that of qemu + kqemu or VMWare respectively?

Re: Win4Lin 3

Win4lin is waaay faster because it doesn't emulate CPU instructions. It only links the virtual machine to the hosting OS by using some kernel hacks (needs kernel patching). The apps run practically as in a true Windows, well... maybe a bit slower because of the link, but still.. it's really really fast.

You can't compare other emulators with Win4lin because they work differently.

Re: Win4Lin 3

I know about the inner workings of Win4Lin. I just didn't know about their speed in relation to other solutions. wink

Re: Win4Lin 3

I have used Win4Lin since 1.0 (1998), currently 5.0. I consider it faster than native Windows. With other emus I have not tried.

Re: Win4Lin 3

Funny you should ask.  I used to dual-boot into Windows AND run Win4Lin -- just to compare.  I no longer dual-boot.  Somehow, Win4Lin seems faster than Windows on bare metal.  I don't know how that's possible, but it sure seems so.

I have XMMS, Gaim, Thunderbird, etc. running, and Win4Lin 9x still manages to keep me very happy, speed-wise.

Win4Lin Pro, on the otherhand has been a huge disappointment...  It's excruciatingly slow (Win2k).  Me thinks the fact that one doesn't have to patch the kernel may not have been the benefit they thought it might be.

Here's hoping w4l-p improves with time.

Re: Win4Lin 3

Is W4L Pro the one running XP and Win 2000?

Re: Win4Lin 3

Hmmm... Why pay $127 when you can pay $100? :-)
http://www.digitalriver.com/dr/v2/ec_Ma … CACHE_ID=0

Also, Windows XP will be supported "later".  Windows 2000 runs very, very slow.

There are also serious installation issues (e.g. Quicken, QuickBooks).  Win4Lin 9x (formerly Win4Lin 5) is very mature and stable -- and fast!
