[Solved] NIC speed slowdown

Hey all,

I updated the bios on my motherboard last week, and when I did that I noticed the network speed was slower than normal, and then yesterday I attempted to copy 15 gig of video files, and was shocked to realize that I'm only connected at 10megabits, on my gigabit lan.

I finally, (fingers crossed) got the bios back to where it should be, and I was able to successfully connect my onbaord nic to my lan at 1gbit.  I then booted to Arch and I'm running at 100, better than 10, but not 1000.

I am going to reboot back to windows to see if I can get the 1000 again.

In the mean time, I'm not sure what to look for in Arch to help me determine the network speed, and what tools to use.

Could someone guide me in the right direction?

[EDIT]
Nope, the speed did not hold, when I rebooted to windows, I was running 100mbps.  how can I tell from within linux how fast my nic is?

Which NIC and what module are you using?

Re: [Solved] NIC speed slowdown

I have the following:

Asus M4A79XTD EVO AM3 AMD 790X ATX  with onboard NIC:  Realtek 8112L

could it be the nic is dying?  I've tried rolling the bios back.

are there any gui tools that will tell you how fast the NIC is working, as well as the NIC's configuration settings?

you can try using ethtool to manually set settings if auto negotation is failing.

Re: [Solved] NIC speed slowdown

Thanx., I installed networkmanager (not sure if it is better)

however, I also reflashed the bios, pulled out the battery for 30 minutes, powered on, loaded defaults, came into linux and 1000Mb/s.  w00t!  I rebooted several times (staying in linux and not going to windows) and still at 1000Mb/s.

I will call this closed for now.
