hp dv6000 problems: overheating, etc...

Hi,

I've been using an hp dv6000 on arch for about 2-3 years now. I run my laptop with a cooling pad and all, and it still gets extremely hot. I use openbox as my desktop environment. For example, right now sensors is reading 75C and 74C for the two cores and 71C for adapter:virtual device...

Sometimes it gets so hot it will just turn off (especially if I'm running things like youtube videos or have many tabs open or doing lots of processes like music encoding with lame, etc.)

Is there anything I can do? Maybe a log file I can check that might tell me what is causing this...or some fix? or anything? I realize the line of HPs has had the motherboard issue and I updated the bios which is "supposed to" fix the fan control algorithm, but it doesn't seem to do much sad

75°C ?!? Huiii... Has this ever been better? If yes, there is probably pretty much dust in your heatsink and the fan is fighting a battle it can't win.

Re: hp dv6000 problems: overheating, etc...

could this be the case knowing that the issue only seems to happen when running "higher performance" tasks?

Are you running a CPU governor like cpufrequtils?http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Cpufrequtils
I had a couple heating problems when I first got my HP running, this solved almost all of them.

Im not sure what GPU your particular lappy has, but you might want to make sure you have the latest driver for it. NVIDIA had issues with their driver a couple iterations ago where the fans would not spin up to speed and thus cause the GPU to overheat and crash one's computer.

Hope that helps

Re: hp dv6000 problems: overheating, etc...

i have a dv2610ca (similar laptop) and ive had it for 3 years now, that temp seems normal, mine idles at 60-70 with the gpu around 70-80.
i use cpufreq and have never had any problems. the specs on AMD's site say anything more then 105 is too hot and the hardware power kill switch is at 120.
this seems on the hot side to me too, but i guess its normal for this model of laptop.

i know this doesn't really fix anything, but i hope it give some peace of mind.

My friend has similar HP laptop. She was running Ubuntu 8.04 for a long time. I installed Arch Linux -- lightweight system with Openbox. After that she was reporting overheating issues. She asked me to install Ubuntu again. After I installed Ubuntu 10.04 she says it runs normal again. Weird.

Re: hp dv6000 problems: overheating, etc...

I installed cpufreq and using powersave the temp is down to ~50-55 as supposed to 75 or so. Unfortunately though, the performance change is definitely noticeable when doing certain things...

@adrians: that is very interesting. I never found problems when I was running ubuntu w/ gnome about 3-4 years ago. When I began to run arch I was also using gnome and I didn't find any issues. It's only been with openbox and I ran compiz-standalone for a week or so to try it out and experienced the problem.

Edit: is this running ubuntu with gnome?

Re: hp dv6000 problems: overheating, etc...

Laptops normally run hot. I have an HP G60 and it's cut off point in theoretically 120 , but luckly it shuts down at 105, it took me about a month to realize I needed to use cpufreq to help with my shutdown issues. The only time I run on powersave is when I am unplugged. Otherwise ondemand is more than adequate to cover what i want to be doing, and scales the CPU usage very well, so my idle temp is normally in the mid 40s. I have yet to try performance, since ondemand really works very well for me and I do do a lot of intensive tasks. It will run up to 90 or so before it cuts in and drops my cpu frequency, to get cooling working. I would also suggest some can air and blowing out your fans, to see if that helps. A tip a grizzled veteran gave me once, make sure you use a qtip or toothpick to hold your fain in place when you use canned air, since it can spin your fans faster than they were made to spin and thus kill them.

@adrians
When you installed archlinux did you install something like cpufreq? The thing about Ubuntu is it takes care of things like that by installing as much as it can to make sure nothing is left to chance. Where as Arch install is minimal and you need to make sure you install all the tools you think you need to have a great environment.

Re: hp dv6000 problems: overheating, etc...

a laptop is supposed to handle 100% load in every component and don't overheat.

you opened another thread here http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=99928 ... makes no sense, a DE doesn't make a system overheat, but it may increase the system load = more heat but never overheat. 70ºC isn't overheating on a laptop cpu. 100ºC yes it is. you should look at your gpu temps. They get way hotter than cpu on dv6000. shutdown limit is 105ºC

It's time to open your laptop and replace thermal compound and clean the fans. Do it yourself or RMA the laptop. DON'T USE A OVERHEATING LAPTOP. It will die in a couple of months.

@sputter: No I didn't install cpufreq. I didn't know I need such programs. Now I read Laptop ArchWiki and see many tools.

@playdafunkimuzic: It was Ubuntu Gnome. Never tried Arch Linux with Gnome. Maybe Gnome has some dependency which take care of Laptop overheating issue.
