SOLVED Vostro 1710 touchpad does not work. Reboot helps (sometimes)

Hi All,

[SOLUTION]
Backup your xorg.conf, then remove the following sections from your xorg :
Module, InputDevice (both), ServerLayout, Files. Restart X and see if it works.
[/SOLUTION]

I have a Dell Vostro 1710. The touchpad does not always work. It does not react to a finger touching it. The 2 buttons also don't react.
In windows XP the touchpad works without any problem.

When I (re)boot the laptop, sometimes the touchpad works, and keep working until the following reboot.  I think I have a 1:10 chance that the touchpad works after a reboot.

I have attached an USB mouse to my laptop, it works without any problem

This does not produce any output:
cat /dev/input/mouse0
This reacts to my USB mouse, and not to my touchpad:
cat /dev/input/mouse1

uname -a
Linux laptop 2.6.33-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu May 13 12:06:25 CEST 2010 i686 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5670 @ 1.80GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

I know I have a ALPS glidepoint, but the following command does not show any ALPS devices.
cat /proc/bus/input/devices

Re: SOLVED Vostro 1710 touchpad does not work. Reboot helps (sometimes)

Hi Again, I have rebooted my laptop, and now my touchpad is working.

I have an external USB mouse connected

cat /dev/input/mouse0, 1 and 2 do not react to mouse or touchpad movement, /dev/input/mouse3 reacts when I move the external mouse, not on the touchpad. I don't understand this, my touchpad is working.

cat /proc/bus/input/devices shows my USB mouse, and my touchpad:

lsusb does not show my touchpad, is my touchpad not connected via USB?

Cedric

code tags make it clear for us as to what the output is and what your comments are in between. Helps us in differentiating the noise

Anyway, could you post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf and your /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf ?

Lets see if your touchpad is being recognized correctly. also, post your Xorg.0.log

Also, for now, do not connect your external mouse, that way we can figure out if mouse0 or mouse1 is your synaptic touchpad

Re: SOLVED Vostro 1710 touchpad does not work. Reboot helps (sometimes)

I have disconnected my mouse last night, suspended the laptop, and this morning I resumed my laptop. Suspending is never a problem on this laptop.

I don't have the following 2 files on my system,
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf
I only have /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
# nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings
# nvidia-settings: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder63) Tue Oct 20 21:01:12 PDT 2009

Re: SOLVED Vostro 1710 touchpad does not work. Reboot helps (sometimes)

Looks like you are using the older version of xorg. You might wanna update your system and see if it works.

Re: SOLVED Vostro 1710 touchpad does not work. Reboot helps (sometimes)

Hi Again,

I have updated my system. No change. I have rebooted 3 times, then my mousepad works again.

What information do we need when the touchpad does not work?

In the meantime, information while the touchpad is working:
I have no USB mouse attached.

Re: SOLVED Vostro 1710 touchpad does not work. Reboot helps (sometimes)

Backup your xorg.conf, then remove the following sections from your xorg : Module, InputDevice (both), ServerLayout, Files. Restart X and see if it works.

Let us know.

Thank you Inxsible,

I have removed the secions you mentioned.

I have rebooted four times, and everytime the touchpad works.

Best regards,
Cedric
