i tried installing amahi on an old piece of hardware and that didnt work out. so i did what i shoulda done from the start and put in arch, setting it up as a file/media server.
the goal is to elegantly share files and stream media (music, video, images) to any and every computer in my network. then maybe add little amahi type goodies in time. so far ssh, samba and xampp are running smoothly, and there is a 500gb external hard drive attached.
the server is headless and i want it to be accessible and controllable from any web browser in my local network. i am using webmin to administer it, and now i want to choose some kind of web based media streamer, i tried jinzora and had trouble loading it, mediatomb is cool but has an ugly web interface. i am thinking of going with the following web based applications:
-ampache or subsonic for media
-eyeOS to see if its useful for generally browsing my machine and maybe other stuff
-is it possible to have picasa be on that machine and work like web-albums?
-amahi does use dlna ... are there any recommended arch friendly dlna web-based clients? (this might be better than ampache/subsonic)
-currently i have xampp, would it be better to go with a traditional lamp setup?
any other ideas on what kind of cool things i can do with a home server?
i dont have it as my dns yet and i can't make it dynamic dns to the web because i live on a campus...but i am enjoying learning about servers and lamp and all of that...

I almost exclusively use my homeserver to stream media to my ps3. It is also set up as a bittorrent-server, but I don't use that functionality all that much.
I use mediatomb-svn and it works, but I'm keeping an eye out for coherence, because it looks like a promising project. I used it in the past, but at that time it didn't do transcoding. IIRC that functionality is basically available now, but I need some advanced settings for my ps3...
Bittorrent is set up with rtorrent and screen (although I'm quite sure you'll find webbased frontends for rtorrent)
Sharing folders is done with NFS.
