Sometimes access denied to samba share

I've been having some issues accessing samba shares that are located on Windows Vista/XP Pro computers.

I'm running KDE 4.4 as my DE and all of my software packages have been updated to their latest versions.

Basically, sometimes dolphin either asks me for a username/password or it just tells me I don't have permission to access the share. Other times it can access the shares just fine, this is just after waiting 5 minutes or so (so without any reboots/daemon restarts/...).
The shares have the correct permissions set and I was able to access them without any trouble under Xubuntu or Arch Linux while running Openbox. (same computer)

So I'm thinking it's either because of some update or because of KDE.

I also tried listing the shares of a specific computer (running Vista) using smbclient and it returned NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED.

EDIT: This is on Arch Linux 64-bit running kernel version 2.6.32 and smbclient version 3.5.0

Re: Sometimes access denied to samba share

Because otherwise it'll get lost amongst the other threads, and I really want to know a solution as I use those samba shares a lot.

Re: Sometimes access denied to samba share

have you tried mounting the shares using mount.cifs, if it works with that, then the problem might be with dolphin or other GUI related. if it doesnt work, try setting the Windows shares to anonymous temporarily and then check again.

And I believe the SMB protocol de-authenticates clients after a certain amount of time unless told otherwise. Although someone with more SMB knowledge than me will come along and confirm.

Re: Sometimes access denied to samba share

Ok, so I was getting the requests for me to give login credentials again and so I tried mount.cifs to see if it worked that way. After doing mount.cifs and going to the folder where the share was mounted, it didn't ask for any credentials and just let me access the files on the share.

So I'm guessing it's dolphin or KDE related? I've already tried looking around a little bit on Google, but I couldn't find similar cases.

Re: Sometimes access denied to samba share

Hey guys, have you managed to find a workaround for this issue?

I'm trying to connect from my Linux machine to a Windows XP network share entering in Dolphin's address bar smb://192.168.1.101 and I sometimes see the list of shared folders, but sometimes I'm asked for username and a password. That's very weird, since it didn't happen on KDE 3.x. It happens also when accessing some of the network shares/files, but again only sometimes...

I haven't done anything in windows to password protect any of my network shares.

Sometimes I can browse and open files using the same approach with no problem at all.

I would really like to access my network places using this approach, but it seems to be broken in KDE 4.x sad

Thank you guys in advance smile.

Re: Sometimes access denied to samba share

Nope, it still doesn't work here, but I haven't been trying real hard to fix it tbh.
I've just been using the mount.cifs way to get access to the shares.
