3) add nomodeset in /boot/grub/menu.lst
4) add libglx to MODULES in /etc/rc.conf

obviously I would rather go with the open source drivers, gwpl, but as the close AMD drivers do work well and someone (Vi0L0) took the effort of wrapping these in a AUR package I'm more than helped with that.
I wouldn't mind to help the xf86-video-radeonhd developers but currently I cannot see how. Put it this way: AMD has done a great job of providing a GNU/Linux X installer that works fine for my purpose.
