cannot load setup.exe/Office 2007 under bin32-wine [SOLVED]

EDIT: the solution is in post #3!

The most relevant thread I found on this problem wasn't helpful: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=86436

Wine 1.2 is final and bin32-wine is now out of the AUR and into [community].  I have it installed and am trying to run setup.exe to install Office 2007 on my Arch box but can't get the installer to run.  It crashes out with the following debug info which isn't very helpful to me.  Suggestions are appreciated!

$ wine setup.exe

Re: cannot load setup.exe/Office 2007 under bin32-wine [SOLVED]

i stopped using ms office with office 2002

but ? did ms office 07 run on wine 1.1 ?

err:ntlm:SECUR32_initNTLMSP ntlm_auth was not found or is outdated. Make sure that ntlm_auth >= 3.0.25 is in your path.

from the first line of the error -- is "ntlm_auth " greater that 3.0.25 installed ?

Re: cannot load setup.exe/Office 2007 under bin32-wine [SOLVED]

Got it!  Needed to install winetricks from the AUR.  Then:

$ winetricks msxml3 dotnet20 gdiplus riched20 riched30 vcrun2005sp1 allfonts

Source: http://mediakey.dk/~cc/howto-office-200 … with-wine/

EDIT:  As of 19-Sep-2010 one does NOT need to install all the winetricks stuff to get this to work; also, winetricks in now in the official repos:

# pacman -S wine winetricks wine_gecko
$ winetricks msxml3
<<insert the office CD now or mount the iso>>
$ wine /path/to/setup.exe

How well does MS Office run on Wine? I'm getting ready to need to use MS Access for work and don't want to have to setup a dual boot or even a VM if I can use Wine.

I did this for a friend... no way would I install that bloated office suite on my machine smile  It seems to run fine (just word and excel).

Well, I haven't tried to use MS Access, but Word, Powerpoint and Excel work just fine if you follow the instructions in appdb (at winehq). There are some features that doesn't work, but be sure to try yourself and see if wine can fit your needs. For me, it works just fine.

Re: cannot load setup.exe/Office 2007 under bin32-wine [SOLVED]

I've just tried this advice without luck- my installation still works with the most recent multilib version of wine, but trying to install again (for gf's account) does not work.  Can't install dotnetfx.exe either through winetricks; complains that wine is 64-bit.  Is there a way to make it think we're 32-bit and it's all gonna be ok?

[edit: the appdb says wine 1.3.2 is a bad version to install with; but downgrading does not help either.]

Re: cannot load setup.exe/Office 2007 under bin32-wine [SOLVED]

Before I could run the setup I had to install binutils-multilib, so do you have that one installed?

Unfortunately I do.  Just tried installing again, no dice.

Works again in the 1.3.3 version, no overrides or hacks needed.

Not for me... try this:

$ mv ~/.wine ~/wine-old
$ winecfg

...then try to install office 2007 again.  Does not work for me without the winetricks described above.

Thank you very much! The update to 1.3.6-1 broke the out of the box readiness. This helps. allfonts isn't strictly necessary though.
