I'm impressed (Arch Linux vs. CentOS 5)

My webserver used to run Centos, but now runs Arch linux. (32bit)
pretty basic nothing special machine: pentium 4, 2ghz, 1gb ram

I ran this script which grabs info from a pdf and converts it into mysql.
the document is pretty large (msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf), and changes regularly and I like to have a copy of it.

on centos: 58 secs

on Arch : 5-10 secs .. I cant give an exact number because I was testing the server under load and other parameters - there was a peak for a couple of seconds then it finished..

I'm very impressed!

edit: typo

Wow...  you have gone from one end of the Linux stability spectrum to the other with that switch.   CentOS is as stable as it gets and Arch is bleeding edge.

Re: I'm impressed (Arch Linux vs. CentOS 5)

well... my first proper distro was debian... I've come along way since then...

besides, if archlinux.org can afford to be on an Arch Linux server, then I'm sure I can afford it too..

Are you keeping your server bleeding edge or are you using ABS to compile stable versions and keep them as they age?
I run Debian on my servers; I absolutely hate distros like CentOS & Fedora.

I'd be interested in that script if you don't mind sharing... I'm often looking thru that price list wink

Re: I'm impressed (Arch Linux vs. CentOS 5)

@Jimi: I don't keep the server bleeding edge, unless there is some extraordinary security patch. Fedora is so..... ahh!

hey guys,
sorry about this, but the creator of the script is giving me a hard time regarding sharing it. (it is still a little buggy and far from perfect)
I take care of the Admin stuff (hardware, setup, apache, phpmyadmin, etc.. ) I have yet to get in to php programming.

the script will be available (and I'll send you guys a pm with a link) once it's been optimised and the creator is ok with it being published.

Sorry.
