Maybe I should set up a dedicated nfs/samba file server.

Yes, I should have said that mine is dedicated - it's a (not especially old) laptop with a fried video card. I wired it to the router, so only the client sides are wireless. Any flickr uploading is initiated via ssh from the server, and at some point within the rest of my lifetime I'll probably set-up an abs and/or pacman cache etc. etc. on it.

If I dedicate a system to file serving it would have to be wireless as it would be based in the garage with my folding machines.  This would mean transferring over the wireless network when downloading from the camera to the RAID volume.  I think a trial is in order.

I tweaked the set up on TOH's laptop and things seem to be better now, also told her not to keep clicking away and to give it a few seconds to do it's stuff.

Re: Best way to share 40,000+ files?

You might also be able to set up some sort of indexing service (eg slocate, Beagle or something similar) and browse using some client that calls it? I've never (needed to) set this up so I'm not sure what you'd have to have on the client - esp. if any are Windows - but it might be worth looking into. Caching thumbnails locally might be useful as well, but it could get quite large.

Re: Best way to share 40,000+ files?

Wouldn't it be more simple to use a uPNP/DLNA-server for this? Images, videos, music are all served with mediatomb-svn (AUR) to my PS3 and all my other computers in the house (read only). I also serve them with NFS to be able to edit the files or add files to the pool.

Thumbnail-support is built-in - not only for images but also for album art in music files. Mediatomb-svn also detects automatically newly added files. *And* more and more appliances understand uPNP/DLNA, so you're not limited to (linux-)computers to access the data.

Indexing works well for images and music, but is almost non-existing for videos (no use of metadata).

Re: Best way to share 40,000+ files?

The great advantage of MediaTomb and similar servers is Windows will pick them up automatically (you'll get a small TV icon in the system tray). I have never used it myself on Windows, only on the PS3 and my old HDX-1000, but it certainly is a cross-platform solution, and MediaTomb is very easy to set up.
