I got the newest catalyst driver. It seems to have broken Xorg, and I can't seem to be able to fix it. This is my xorg config, note using vesa in the only way I can get a display but it is at the wrong resolution. If i put in fglrx I get a seg fault. I would post the log but I forgot where that is.

A simple google search could have shown you the log file location. /var/log/Xorg.log.0
Have you tried xf86-video-ati or xf86-video-radeon drivers ??

There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

No. I need good 3d acceleration. Those are more fall backs if I can't get the catalyst drivers to work.

Yes, but 3d acceleration is moot without a working X. I am not suggesting that you move to the open source. But atleast if the open source drivers work, then you can atleast confirm that the problem is in the ati driver and look for appropriate help.

Vesa works, despite the fact that it can only be set to 1280 x 1024 and not 1440 x 900. The problem is definitly with the Catalyst drivers. Let me post the Xorg log.

Was the catalyst driver working for you previously and only the newest version is broken?
Offline
Old version worked fine. 10.7 seems to have broken it.
Here is my log:

Also: I have run aticonfig --initial and that did not seem to fix it. I even tried deleting the xorg.config file and then doing the command. It still gave me seg fault.
Offline
That looks pretty ugly unfortunately. No explicit errors, X just seems to segfault.

If you check the AUR for xorg-server (I assume that's what you're talking about) then you'll see a few packages specifically with patches for Catalyst. I can't tell you which one to pick though, the 1.8 one would be the most logical choice if you are using the latest Catalyst driver, but you should find out which Xorg server your driver supports. I understand AMD is usually a bit behind when it comes to recent Xorg servers.

Using the ati driver and putting ati for the video driver seems to work. But I have no opengl in wine. Anyone know how to make the catalyst driver work?

Xorg 7.5 features Xorg server 1.7, so try some xorg-server packages from the AUR, and build catalyst against those. By the looks of it 1.8 definitely won't work, being too new. I assume the newest driver means you're using 10.7, that still only officially supports xorg-server 1.7.

.:B:. you are wrong, 10.7 supports xorg-server 1.8 ...

That's bizarre. AMD's download page says Xorg 7.5:

AMD never says which xorg-server (here 1.8), only the complete suite (here X.Org 7.5).

Bah! My apologies. Because there is a Release page for Xorg 7.6 I assumed that meant it was already released, but I completely overlooked that it says 'due September 2010 somewhere' at the bottom of the page .

At this point I might just stick with the open source driver. Its opengl performance is not great but it is adequate for what i need. and it makes xorg only use like 10-20 mb instead of 50-80 mb.

Hi rito25,
have you tried one of the patched xorg servers from the catalyst repository? I have not had a segfault with the stock xorg-server package, but the patched server fixed some artefacts for me. It might be worth giving it a try. It's as simple as following the instructions on the catalyst wiki page. Don't forget to build a new xorg.conf with "aticonfig --initial" after installing the catalyst driver and one of the patched xorg servers. Good luck!
I can't say that OpenGL works perfectly, though. At least, in foobillard the balls look somewhat strange.
