Howdie,
I have just installed empathy (still chasing video chat via jabber) but I am running into a brick wall here.
Empathy will not connect to the xmpp-network, no matter what I do. I installed empathy and telepathy-gabble as well as salut (just for grabs'n'giggles) but no luck. It keeps claiming that some password check has failed, but the passwords are fine, for sure. Mostly because I can connect using Kopete just fine (no video there) and because the same error even happens when I create a most definitely brand new user.
How can I start tracking this problem down?

Before this drops off the first page: Anyone?

Well... for me is working out of the box... but i'm overriding server settings, and no SSL:

maybe it can't read/add the passwod in gnome-keyring since telepathy-mission relies on it. you actually have logs in empathy and you should check them

Keyring sounds about right, thought I use KDE not Gnome. Where would I find those logs? I searched my system with
sudo find / -name empathy*.* | grep -i log
to no avail and in empathy itself I don't see anything that looks like a log, but I might just be blind
Overriding the server settings: Why would I do that and what would I put there? Plus, my netbook running Kubuntu NBR 10.04 runs empathy just fine, standard settings and all.

IIRC, the logs are ~/.gnome2 somewhere.

Unlikely, since I use KDE And I looked around in .kde with no result.

as far as I know kwallet and gnome-keyring are compatible, so you can use kwallet.
overriding server settings, only means that if you have this jabber JID: foo@bar.net
in server put "bar.net"
and in port, just leave the default

no
~/.local/share/Empathy/logs
but those are chat logs and i was talking about logs generated by empathy/telepathy* which can be read from Empathy clicking on Help->Debug menu

Empathy is a GNOME project. It'll be a cold day in hell before its files move to ~/.kde.

It seems that this is a bug in telepathy-gabble. I'm having the same issue. All other clients connect just fine.

... but I can connect w/o problems, and my system is up to date.

Greetings,
Empathy is a gnome project. You using KDE has no baring on that, it will never store things in a kde folder.
I am wondering though, have you tried logging out of kde and back in or restarting your computer? I am guessing you have but still thought I should ask. I know that for example I couldn't really use empathy until I restarted.

Thanks for all the feedback. Yes I restarted my PC, couple times over (tend to shut it down if I don't need it for more then 5 mins ).
So the logs are in the debug menu? Should have though of that, shame on me. Will report back later after work.
I could try to log into other, non-XMPP accounts to see if the same thing happens. Might do that and let you guys know.

@thom_raindog useless. you actually want logs from telepathy-gable and from mission
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

How do I get those? This is what the debug menu in empathy spit out. Sorry if I am being thick

Hmm.. all I have there is empathy and mission-control. No telepathy of any kind. And the logs for mission-control are completely empty.

No hope left, is there?

Have you pacman -Syu & pacman -S telepathy-haze telepathy-gable and such, and it still not showing them as active?

Much better, thank you. I can now log in, and my two jabber accounts see each other, little camera symbol next to the name on the list and all.
Still no video calls though. Empathy on the arch desktop says it can not open the video nor audio stream and tells me "Could not create the valve element".
Does that ring a bell with anyone?

did you installed gstreamer0.10-plugins ?
