Hi,
I am using linux only for a few months. I installed arhclinux + openbox from scratch. I connect to wifi using netcfg. I can connect to internet, but it takes about 10sec to do that and I allways get this error:
[marko@Asus ~]$ sudo netcfg "SiOL Wireless"
:: SiOL Wireless up [BUSY]
ioctl[SIOCSIWAP]: Operation not permitted
ioctl[SIOCSIWESSID]: Operation not permitted
find: »/var/run/network//suspend/«: No such file or directory
[DONE]
I checked the wiki and googled around but I can't figure out what's wrong.
I know I should post more stuff about it but like I said I am a newbie. Don't know what to post.

The last line is a known bug and the workaround is to add the directory that's missing. The earlier stuff can have any varied causes - I did have it myself at one point but I cant remember why (should keep notes).
You can get that sometimes if the firmware's missing, but then I doubt you'd connect. It might not hurt to search for your wireless card make and model on the wiki though and check.
Also, what's the contents of your netcfg profile file?

I've fixed the missing directory error.
/etc/network.d/SiOL Wireless
CONNECTION="wireless"
ESSID="SiOL Wireless"
INTERFACE="wlan0"
DESCRIPTION="Automatically generated profile"
SCAN="yes"
IP="dhcp"
TIMEOUT="10"
SECURITY="wpa"
KEY="blabla"
/etc/network.d/SiOL Wireless2
CONNECTION='wireless'
DESCRIPTION='A simple WPA encrypted wireless connection'
INTERFACE='wlan0'
SECURITY='wpa'
ESSID='SiOL Wireless'
KEY='blabla'
IP='dhcp'
I can connect using both of them.

You might want to remove the KEY from the last one.
Try adding NETCFG_DEBUG="yes" before the call to get the debug output.
Also the results of:
iwconfig wlan0
and
lsmod

Have you set-up wpa_supplicant?
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/WPA_Supplicant
"...one cannot be angry when one looks at a penguin." - John Ruskin
"Life in general is a bit shit, and so too is the internet. And that's all there is." - scepticisle

Yes I have
/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
CONNECTION='wireless'
DESCRIPTION='A wpa_supplicant configuration based wireless connection'
INTERFACE='wlan0'
SECURITY='wpa-config'
WPA_CONF='/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf'
IP='dhcp'
Offline
Hmm... Maybe wpa_suppliciant.conf is not setup correctly...?
I think I was suppose to put this line at the top of the wpa_suppliciant file:
ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=wheel
But it just gave me this error:
[marko@Asus ~]$ wpa_supplicant -B -Dwext -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
Failed to read or parse configuration '/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf'.
[marko@Asus ~]$ sudo wpa_supplicant -B -Dwext -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
ioctl[SIOCSIWAP]: Operation not permitted
ioctl[SIOCSIWESSID]: Operation not permitted
ctrl_iface exists and seems to be in use - cannot override it
Delete '/var/run/wpa_supplicant/wlan0' manually if it is not used anymore
Failed to initialize control interface '/var/run/wpa_supplicant'.
You may have another wpa_supplicant process already running or the file was
left by an unclean termination of wpa_supplicant in which case you will need
to manually remove this file before starting wpa_supplicant again.
ioctl[SIOCSIWAP]: Operation not permitted
ioctl[SIOCSIWESSID]: Operation not permitted

Ah, that's a netcfg profile, not wpa_supplicant.conf.
The wiki link I posted shows how to set one up - it then needs referring to in the netcfg profile.
However, netcfg 2.5 (can) now generate a wpa_supplicant.conf on the fly. Try using the /etc/network.d/examples/wireless-wpa-configsection example.
Here's a wpa_supplicant.conf example:
ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=wheel
network={
ssid="HOME"
proto=RSN
pairwise=CCMP TKIP
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
psk=<mykey>
}
Here's my configsection profile:
ONNECTION="wireless"
INTERFACE=wlan0
SECURITY="wpa-configsection"
ESSID="HOME"
IP="dhcp"
CONFIGSECTION='
ssid="HOME"
proto=RSN
pairwise=CCMP TKIP
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
psk=<mykey>
'
Another test would be to do it manually (follow http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wireless ) and make sure it's a netcfg configuration problem.

I made a mistake. The file I posted above was not my wpa_suppliciant.con file. It was a /etc/network.d/wpa_suppl
CONNECTION='wireless'
DESCRIPTION='A wpa_supplicant configuration based wireless connection'
INTERFACE='wlan0'
SECURITY='wpa-config'
WPA_CONF='/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf'
IP='dhcp'
This is my /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf file:
ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=wheel
network={
ssid="SiOL Wireless"
proto=RSN
pairwise=CCMP TKIP
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
#psk="blabla"
psk=blabla
}
I tried using the /etc/network.d/examples/wireless-wpa-configsection example. Couldn't connect then.
I think it's wpa_suppliciant problem:
[marko@Asus ~]$ sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
Password:
[marko@Asus ~]$ sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
[marko@Asus ~]$ sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid "SiOL Wireless"
[marko@Asus ~]$ sudo wpa_supplicant -B -Dwext -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
ioctl[SIOCSIWAP]: Operation not permitted
ioctl[SIOCSIWESSID]: Operation not permitted

You can log the wpa_supplicant stuff by not specifying -B and adding -d:
sudo wpa_supplicant -d -Dwext -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
That should give a bit more information.

EDIT: sorry cross posted. This probably won't fix the wpa_supplicant issue.
Try adding/changing these two in your netcfg profile:
SECURITY='wpa-config'
WPA_CONF='/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf'
and commenting out the ESSID and KEY (or connecting to the wpa_suppl profile).

Doesn't work.
[marko@Asus ~]$ sudo netcfg -u wpa_suppl
:: wpa_suppl up [BUSY]
ioctl[SIOCSIWAP]: Operation not permitted
ioctl[SIOCSIWESSID]: Operation not permitted
> WPA Authentication/Association Failed
[FAIL]
[marko@Asus ~]$ sudo netcfg -u "SiOL Wireless"
:: SiOL Wireless up [BUSY]
> Wireless network "" not present.
[FAIL]
You know what... I don't care about the error anymore. I set it to autostart when I login to openbox. By the time I get to openbox the network is already started. So why bother with the error if it works anyway. Thanks a lot for helping me skanky

Okay, but just one more quick thing - can you give the results of:
lspci | grep -i net
please?

No don't get me wrong. I do want to get to bottom of this! But I hate to bother other people about it because it works anyway

Okay, well I have to admit defeat here.
You could use more "d" in the wpa_supplicant call to get more detail. I guess three "-ddd", and check the entries immediately above the errors could be something to try.
Also, I do wonder about the messages further down that log saying the AP isn't WPA - you could check the settings there against your config. The issue with that is that you do connect, so I assume that's a red herring.
The driver's relatively new so you could make sure you're fully up to date and check if you need to add firmware separately - but I don't think you do.
I'll give it some more thought when I get some more time. Or hopefully someone who knows a bit more about this may spot the thread.
Sorry I couldn't help.

OK. I'm gonna try with -ddd. Thanks skanky

Just FYI, Ventil1, I have a similar card as yours and have the same problem. I just let the error happen and move on because the network does work. Anyway, I'll be watching this thread and see if there is ever a solution found.
My card:
[mrunion@turdsniffer network]$ sudo lspci | grep -i net
07:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 03)
08:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8172 (rev 10)

Could be worth filing a bug? Not sure who with though....one of wpa_supplicant, or Realtek or the kernel, I guess?

I doubt that it's still useful to you guys, but for me it was the combination of drivers and wpa_supplicant version.
Errors were exactly the same:
ioctl[SIOCSIWAP]: Operation not permitted
ioctl[SIOCSIWESSID]: Operation not permitted
Wireless card is realtek as well, but since no one mentioned external drivers here, I guess it's not the same one:
02:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8191SEvB Wireless LAN Controller (rev 10)
The only drivers for this are available on the realtek site, either native ones or win2k-version via ndiswrapper.
Error is with the native ones (rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0017.0507.2010, built against 2.6.35) AND wpa_supplicant-0.6.10. With 0.6.9 everything works fine.
wpa_supplicant-0.6.9 (totally unmodified, judging by the hashes) is even shipped along with the drivers and is actually recommended by the readme in case they don't work with the newer one, so I guess something has changed between this two releases, and prehaps errors you get are also related to this change.
