I'm going to take a long shot and suggest to my company that dropping SBS 2003 and replacing it with something without built in limitations is the way to go. We're up against all of those limitations and time is not something that I have a lot of.
The challenge is that, like most small businesses, this is a Microsoft shop. The primary tools are Office (of course), Dynamics NAV 5.0, Bartender, and an older custom built program written by a guy that's a *nix user (He'll port... I hope). There's no chance that I'm going to get them away from the desktop aspect of these anytime in the near future. I'm thinking that it may be possible to get the NAV and Bartender servers running under Linux with WINE. And, I know that it's possible to get Outlook's "company calendar" working with a Linux backend (It's freaky to me that a shared calendar is the hook... really, realy freaky).
I was doing some quick and dirty research and came across ClearOS. It's focus is exactly my target. I'm curious to find out from you, my fellow Archers, what your impression is of this distro.

i have not seen Clear
( just googled it )
but i am familiar with CentOS 5 and RHEL 5
CentOS is a good choice and supports KVM if your hardware dose
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=clearos
it looks like a red hat bases os
BUT ??
The distribution is provided as a free download, inclusive of free security updates for 18 months.
like RHEL not free as in free
see
https://secure.clearcenter.com/portal/build1.jsp
$80 or $160/year

Thank you for the excellent responce, but by definition, they can only sell support; Just like RedHat. What I would need from a distro like this is time to figure out how they do what they do. Sure, I can collect the information now, but with my current schedule having a starting point would be helpful.

How about ArchServer?
Anyway, what's wrong with Debian or CentOS for a server?

I agree. I've faced the same problems before at my last job
I played with ClearOS back when it was ClarkConnect (they name changed 12 months or so ago), but never had an opportunity to use it in production. Back then it seemed like a very well put together package, so things can only have improved (in theory!)
EDIT
How about ArchServer?
We don't have a stable release yet for starters

It's sexy as hell to me to think of implementing a Arch server. I know Arch and I know it's community, so I know the level of skill and quality of help available can be both excellent and timely. Maybe I'll just start putting the pieces together and feed back as much as I can into the ArchServer project.
--EDIT--
Registering with the ArchServer project...

You could try zarafa, which is already in the AUR here at AL, furthermore I do have already a first draft of these packages working on AS. I will add these to the Repo in the next couple of days (if time allows...).

I really wish the company I work for will drop Microsoft or at least adopt a little bit of open source but unfortunately being government, they like to spend money just because they can.
