Can I limit my download quota?

Hi, all!

I do a lot of downloading (and uploading of GNU/Linux torrents). I have had an email from my ISP on two occasions now saying that my usage has exceeded what they define as the 'fair usage'. I'd be really surprised if I downloaded this much, so want to impose my own restrictions. Does anyone know a way to (for example) limit my daily usage?

In fairness to my ISP they said that this isn't a problem, but they reduce my 'peak time' speed to 1 meg, which is inconvenient.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris.

Re: Can I limit my download quota?

You can have a look at the QUOTA iptables module. There's a thread somewhere on the forums about it discussion this same problem.

Re: Can I limit my download quota?

Cheers, guys; they sound like they could be worth investigating. Looks like pyshaper is not available in the main repo's , though.

I use xfce and have just noticed that panel applet 'Network Monitor' has an option in the properties to set the 'automatic maximum' of the incoming and outgoing traffic. Could it be as simple as calculating the maximum my ISP expects (100 gb per month), divided by the number of seconds in a month, therefore enabling me to 'cap' my usage to nnn kb/ sec?

Sounds too good to be true.

Chris.

But since you are not continually downloading you'll be limiting yourself more than necessary, I'd try to go for a system looking at your real usage instead of such a rough heuristic.

Re: Can I limit my download quota?

The daemon vnstat keeps track of your network consumption. So it might be helpful to keep your use under control. I don't think it can handle quotas though.

vnstat can help you with your calculations, but it doesn't handle quotas.
