I was just wondering if there was a good reason why xine-ui or totem aren't suggested under
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lig … plications
I'm not contesting that they should be listed as much as I am curious that there must be a reason that two programs that take about 30mb drive space are ignored in favour of programs that take about 90mb (smplayer or gnome-mplayer) or 130mb (vlc).

i guess because totem is a gnome app and we know how hated is gnome in this community .
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

I guess it also depends on the dependencies that it brings in. I do not know if it does, but if the installed size is 30 mb and along with dependencies its 500mb, then it would hardly be considered a lightweight app.
Having said that, I do not believe vlc has a place there either.
Finally, its a wiki, if you think something is missing or is erroneous, please feel free to correct the situation

There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

The stock mplayer is relatively light but grabs smbclient (60+ MB) and lirc-utils that depend on python (another 60+ MB). We have some lighter versions in AUR.

MPlayer can be compiled into a binary that's 5.4MB large and still plays everything (including DVD menus and even Blu-ray). Then if you really, really need a GUI, gnome-mplayer can be compiled with just gtk and dbus as dependecies and is itself 300kB large. My regular mplayer compile, that's not stripped as much as possible, is 8.9MB. So if MPlayer is heavy, it's the Arch packaging. Same goes for xine and VLC actually, both can be a lot lighter than what Arch packaging shows, without sacrificing playback functionality.
Still, in the end MPlayer is lightest and VLC by far the heaviest. The inclusion of VLC in that list baffles me, I must say.

Maybe VLC just SEEMS light since most of its functionality is well hidden °__°
Mplayer or VLC... who cares... both do not seem very light :3

I just pacman -Rns'd all media players then, pacman -S'ing them one by one, (but not going through with it) I get
25mb for totem,
30mb for xine-ui,
89mb for mplayer,
66mb for vlc.
I counld have sworn vlc was even bigger before. I've got nothing for pacman -Qdt, and my only programs are midori, pcmanfm, abiword, transmission, and a few little utilities.
I'm going with gxine myself, at 29mb. Totem works kind of wierd. Is xine old hat these days? Haven't heard much about it recently.
