Hey fellow Archers,
About the "Other Languages" subforum, would it make sense to separate the language threads into their own language category subforum?
This way the native speakers of one language can easily navigate the threads in their native language?
Would this be worth the reorganization of the subforum? Would this be more helpful?
What is everyone's opinion?

Many international communities have their own forums. I don't see much going on in the "Other Languages" subforum.

I think there are tons of languages, so it would be a bit difficult to do, unless you stick to some major languages and create a 'dumpster' for the rest.

and then have regular requests from the dumpster language users to get them out of there?
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

That can be dealt with by specifying some sort of 'condition' (more than 20 non-trivial posts a week in that language for example).
None of our language threads qualify for that, I think .

won't you have to understand the language to make sure that the 20 posts are non-trivial??
Google Translation can only help you so much.

What about replacing that forum with a link to the "international communities" page? I don't think this sub forum is of much use; it's also hard to moderate if you don't know all the languages.

I would second that.

- 1, we still have a lot of languages which cannot be covered by local communities. Arabic, Hindi, Kisuaheli, Bahasa Indonesionia - I didn't check it out, but that's probably a fifth of the world population.
So we should just proceed as we did in the wiki - move as much as possible to the local level. But we would still need this subforum. It is almost impossible to moderate/control, yes. But the communities largely control themselves.
Perhaps we could do a sticky like "Check your local community first" - but in many cases, there are simply no local communities (yet).

As pointed out, it does seem redundant to have a subforum with all the languages mixed randomly.
There are other international communities, where people of those languages, are more likely to find support than a secluded area with all of them.
The languages that do not have their own international community may need it though.
I think the sticky approach would be a good idea, but a problem would be for those with not enough knowledge of English to comprehend the message.
Yes they could use Google Translate, but I find their translations most of the time to be inaccurate and not useful.

Google translate usually does word-for-word translations, ignoring grammar, expressions, slang and other niceties the human brain can grasp but a machine translator cannot.

It depends on the language you are using and how many people have contributed to better translations. On a few occasions, the grammar for a language would be OK, but it is not great.

My personal 'best' solution would be to have ONE sticky closed thread in the languages subforum with references to Arch-related forums in a specific language (if it exists).
Talking about Bahasa Indonesia (my country uses a similar language) I'd be surprised if they didn't have their own forum. I haven't seen ANY malay posts here yet. Of course, most of us are at least bilingual anyway....

Now that I think about it, it does not have to be in a specific language. It is possible to have multiple (user contributed) translations of the references in the same sticky closed thread so more than one international member could use it.
Edit: Nevermind, it does exist...
