Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

I think you should be using KDM as a login manager to get those options.

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

Thanks, but I do use KDM - always have.  This problem only arose after the upgrade to KDE 3.4

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

if you use already kdm then i guess you have a wrong kdmrc
kdmrc had a big change in kde 3.4
check for shutdown settings and who is allowed to shutdown the pc.
on my systems it works so it should work on yours too.

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

I don't think it can be kdmrc.  I have Allow Shutdown-Local-Everybody.  Otherwise surely my new test user would not be able to shut down normally from the desktop.  Also, my normal user account does have permission to shutdown because after ending the session I get put back to the KDM login screen, then if I choose shutdown from there I get the screen with the picture of lightning bolts and I can choose shutdown or reboot.  So I am allowed to shut down, but the first logout screen just does not give me that option and so the shutdown procedure requires about 6 mouse clicks rather than 2.

Just to be sure, I renamed kdmrc and copied over the kdmrc from a working installation.  It didn't make any difference. sad

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

Utterly crazy guess, but whole situation seems crazy: maybe it's .xinitrc's fault? Moreover, do you start kdm via rc.conf? If yes, I'd suggest you to try starting it via inittab.

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

.xinitrc was just exec startkde.  Tried emptying .xinitrc completely - no difference.

I've always started kdm from rc.conf; been meaning to switch to inittab for ages and, prompted by lucke's suggestion, have done so.  Unfortunately the problem persists!

Logic tells me that as it is only my regular user account which is affected, the cause is to be found somewhere in my home directory.  It's not really a big deal, more of an annoyance and one of those things which is going to bug me until I find a solution.

I appreciate the suggestions to date and would welcome any more ideas.

Maybe you accidentally removed your user from the users group or something as obscure? ;-) Nah, I don't really have a clue. Let's write another sci-fi novel about evil machines, who dare to oppose us, instead of serving ;-)

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

After much experimentation with the contents of my /home directory, I finally tracked this problem down.  It was being caused by a modification I made quite a long time ago to my .bash_profile, where I had added:

export DISPLAY=localhost:0

Deleting that line restores the normal logout options.
As far as I remember, I added this line as a result of a tip somewhere that this would allow me to run applications as root from within my user desktop and it didn't cause any trouble until after the KDE 3.4 upgrade.  Anyway, I am happy to live without this facility and that the logout problem has gone away. big_smile  big_smile

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

Hi KDE users
kde 3.4.1 is ready in testing, be aware that testing includes already gcc4,binutils and new glibc!
KDE was built with gcc3, so please don't upgrade the mentionened packages.
Enjoy the bugfixes and new features, tell me your opinion here.
I plan to move kde 3.4.1 tomorrow evening (Europe) to extra so please report problems immediatly.

have a nice weekend,
greetings

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

Used for about 20 mins now, seems all fine smile  Only "problem" was that the Akregator article list was reset for some of the feeds, so got some double entries of articles. Hardly the packager's fault wink Akregator has had its fair share of bugs, but I still think it is the best RSS reader.

I was really looking forward to see http://people.warp.es/~isaac/images/konq-adblock2.png -- but it seems like I might have to wait till 3.5 (4?). Or maybe patch and build myself.

Thanks for the packages tpowa smile

It works fine here as well- or at least I've not been able to spot any rough edges, yet.

I'm impressed that you've already built kde 3.4.1. Where'd you find the sources? I can't locate them on any of the mirrors I checked, either in stable or unable.

Thanks.

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

dhave, in short packagers get tarballs earlier, rest of explanation can be found on kde wiki.
if you want to build your own kde packages you have to wait until kde is official out.

Hello.
I have KDE 3.4.0.
Should I pacman -Syu and upgrade to KDE 3.4.1 or is it better to unistall kde first?

Thank you

On both my computers I had no trouble just doing pacman -Syu (upgrading).

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

hi
the deinstallation process was needed for upgrading from kde 3.3 to 3.4
due to a pacman bug, from 3.4.0 to 3.4.1 this is not needed.

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

Well, I thought that this might be fixed when 3.4.1 came out, but it's not.

When I try to compile a program that depends on KDE from source, I get an error message,

checking for KDE... libraries /opt/kde/lib, headers /opt/kde/include
checking if UIC has KDE plugins available... no
configure: error: you need to install kdelibs first.

I have read that this could be due to kdelibs not being built with the same version of QT that I have, but I have the latest QT from pacman, and I still have a problem. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what I should do? Please?

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

could you please check if /etc/profile.d/kde.sh exists on your system?
try pacman -S kde-common if it doesn't exist

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

tpowa, /etc/profile.d/kde.sh does exist.. I really am sad that I am the only one with this issue, but since it only seems to be affecting me, I'll try to figure it out myself, no big deal, I guess.

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

Hi,

Thanks for these really timely kde builds.

I am getting a kwin crash:

-reboot
-login
-launch any app <-kwin crash
-logout
-login
-everything is fine

Not a big deal, as I leave the computer on most of the time.
