[SOLVED] Secure networks only work as root, not as normal user :-o

I can't figure out why i can't connect to my network as a normal user. It works perfectly as root.

I'm using networkmanager. When I log in as root, i selected my network from the dropdown and entered the WEP key, and viola, connected!

When I try this as a normal user, it doesn't work. The screen pops up asking me for the credentials (WEP key in my case), but when i try to connect, the networkmanager applet shows the swirly thing and then after a second or two returns back to the screen.

It keeps returning back to the credentials screen and never works!

I had my 32 bit Arch working just fine previously. It would ask me for the keyring every time though. Now, with 64bit and the same settings applied, no luck at all!

Any ideas?

it could be a problem with the 64 bit networkmanager, did u try using wicd or any other gui program?

No, i have only tried networkmanager. I love networkmanager. hehe

Does Wicd have a cool little notification area applet?

EDIT: I see it does in the wicd.sourceforge.net screenshots! Still doesn't look as cool as networkmanager though.

If I can't find a solution I might just have to try it though. Or perhaps netcfg... But i hope i can get networkmanager to work because it looks the nicest

Are you starting consolekit and dbus?

If you are not using GNOME, you should start your session with:

dbus-launch --exit-with-session --sh-syntax ck-launch-session <your-session-manager>

You should also read http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Net … ormal_user.

Hey Stebalien, I am indeed using Gnome. I have dbus starting in my daemons. I have consolekit and it is up to date but it isn't listed in my daemons. I don't think i need that because nm-applet worked fine in my 32bit arch before i migrated.

As a matter of fact, nm-applet loads just fine for me and I can connect with a lanline to my network. I can also successfully connect to any unsecured wireless network as a regular user.

The only problem i have is i can't connect to a secured wireless network as a regular user, only as root. Everything else works just fine except this limitation! Wierd, isn't it!?

The solution is to add your user to the "networkmanager" group.
